HP Agents on ESX 3.x and SIM

Hi,

We have been running ESX for a while, but never installed HP agents on them. We are looking into it now, but its a bit confusing to this old Windows guy.

Anyway - once added to SIM, should the ESX server show up as "ESX" or just plain old "Linux". For us, it just shows up as "Linux"; also, I don't see any inventory information for it. So I am thinking we did something wrong.

Could someone let me know what I should "expect" to see in SIM for the ESX boxes so that I know if we are on the right track or have something broken.

Thanks
Nelson

Thanks!

We had to reboot the ESX server to get the agents to work, but now they show up as you desscribed.

Thanks again.

Re: HP Agents on ESX 3.x and SIM

Nelson,

It does show up as Linux-VMWare ESX Server.

It appears that you are able to see at least net-snmp from your SIM server.

ESX has a firewall configured by default to allow nothing in/out.

In order for the SIM server to see the SIM agents, you will need to allow access to the agents from the SIM server.

In our test ESX 3.02 server, these services are listed as:

[root@server root]# esxcfg-firewall --services

CIMHttpServer
CIMHttpsServer
CIMSLP
snmpd
sshServer

All of these need to be allowed in.

[root@server root]# esxcfg-firewall --enableServer

You might also need to allow UDP/162 outbound to your SIM server for traps.

I believe this gets handled automatically if you install via PSP for ESX.

You might also want to check your /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf file. Make sure it includes the following:

# VMware MIB modules. To enable/disable VMware MIB items
# add/remove the following entries.
dlmod SNMPESX /usr/lib/vmware/snmp/libSNMPESX.so
