yeah. i've tried that... didnt work for me... are installing at esx install point (i.e. scripted install) or are you installaing manually?

Manual installation from an NFS share.
I am using 8.6 however.

I would recommend using Configure or Repair Agent wizard for installing ESX agent. It is simple and effective but make sure-
you have root permitted for SSH and ESX version is 3.5 update 4 or above.
