How to configure psp on linux server

Hi, we have hp insight manager at our site. Recently we started to install linux server on HP DL 380 Proliant Server. How to i make the hp insight manager monitor these servers. Pls kindly assist.

I need the standard procedure cos i have this senario on my site.

i have 5 servers. A, B, C, D and E.
A did not install hpasm and snmp.conf not configure but it can be detected by insight mangager.
B and C install with hpasm and snmp.conf configured but it CAANNOT be detected
D and E install with hpasm and snmp.conf configured AND it CAN be detected..

Why is this so? Any 1 can enlighten me? Thanks.

Re: How to configure psp on linux server

really nice conditions,

>>A did not install hpasm and snmp.conf not configure but it can be detected by insight mangager.
-- It can be detectec but i am sure they cant be managed by SIM and also cant be recognised properly.
Reason: Because SIM takes data from agents(PSP) and via SNMP (both you don't have)
Soln: You need to have PSP and snmpd properly installed n configured.

>>B and C install with hpasm and snmp.conf configured but it CAANNOT be detected
-- Did you check snmpd.conf settings, is that community string set properly to all or SIM server (NOT 127.0.0.1)

>> D n E are working fine so u can see what missing others.
-- I am wondering what you mean by working? Are they detected properly as DL380 in SIM and having SMH working fine? are you able to launch tools on them via SIM?

Re: How to configure psp on linux server

Hi Ajax, that is a good question too. It only detects the server name as Linux but blank for the OS Name.
When i click on the hostname and enter into its properties page. It only show simple information.

Any HP guys over here to assist? HELP.

Re: How to configure psp on linux server

If they are detecting Server Name as Linux means your SNMP settings(Comunity strings) are not proper.
Just make it confirm via go to system page and check available protocol SNMP is listed or not.
I am sure it wont be so set ur comunity string to proper.
So ur snmpd.conf will look like below:

dlmod cmaX /usr/lib64/libcmaX64.so
rocommunity public 127.0.0.1
rwcommunity private 127.0.0.1
trapcommunity public
trapsink 192.168.90.1 public
trapsink hpsimservername

Just remove 127.0.0.1 and it will work fine.
Hope it help you.

Re: How to configure psp on linux server

Hi Ajax, thanks for your reply.

2 questions. How do i install hpasm properly. i install using psp8.0 and i just extract and install only hpasm. Is that enough?

Secondly,
this is my snmp config

com2sec hpagent 172.17.0.0/16 HPASM
group MyROGroup v1 hpagent
group MyROGroup v2c hpagent
group MyROGroup usm hpagent
view all included .1
access MyROGroup "" any noauth prefix all none none
access MyRWGroup "" any noauth prefix all all all
trapsink 172.17.66.234 HPASM
trap2sink 172.17.66.234 HPASM
informsink 172.17.66.234 HPASM
trapcommunity HPASM
authtrapenable 1

Is this correct? If possible, can you roughly explain what each line means? Really appreciate..

Re: How to configure psp on linux server

Hi,

U get PSP as full bundle it comes with SMH(System Management Homepage) and other drivers and agents required so dont extract only hpasm, You need to install whole bundle.

steps are:
1) Extract bundle and run install.sh to install everything.
2) It will ask u few yes/no give it.
3) It will ask comunity strings so give as i sai previously.
4) So after installtion you will have 127.0.0.1 in ur /etc/snmp/snmpd.conf just remove it. and all should be as i said before.
5) after removing 127.0.0.1 just restart snmpd service using command: service snmpd restart
6) now restart hpasm: service hpasm restart
It will restart all other related daemons.
7) now delete server from SIM and discover again.
Hope it will work.

Re: How to configure psp on linux server

Hi Ajax,

when i instasll ./install.sh, it reach this part and it hangs there

/bin/tar: xorg-x11-libs-6.8.1-23.EL.i386.rpm: Not found in archive
/bin/tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

......(it hangs here and i have to do a ctrl+c to continue)..........

Restoring user defined agent thresholds... [ Done ]

Not sure y.

The machine B that is list above can be detected! horray. but i find that the syntax is different from what i use above. Any idea how to incorporate what i use to fit your settings, ajax?

Now there's some issue with the hp insight manager display
my server will show the following information

HS - HWarestatus: Click for detail. (but when i click, there's no details)
MP- no management processor disovered
SW - VC Agent not found
VPM - nothing

Product name - linux server (instead of the hardware model like HP DL380G5 etc)
OS Name - nothing

It's drving me crazy.

Re: How to configure psp on linux server

Hi,

HS - HWarestatus: Click for detail. (but when i click, there's no details) -- Means u have not installed PSP properly here. When u install it u will get SMH when u click on this icon. or u can go there by "http://:2381" just see if its working?
MP- no management processor disovered -- It clearly says you have not discovered iLO. so discover iLO in SIM.
SW - VC Agent not found --Only for windows so no use
VPM - nothing --Only for windows do no use

Product name - linux server (instead of the hardware model like HP DL380G5 etc)-- It is the same case i told u psp not installed or SNMP settings are not proper.
OS Name - nothing --same as above reason.

So its ok hpldu is not required so move to other one. once it started restart service as i mentioned in previous mail. and please paste all contents of snmpd.conf after installing PSP.
One by one.
Note: Everything fine means yopu should have server detected by proper
1. name (Proliant DL360 g1 or what it is)
2. everything else like protocol and OS name fine.
3. when click hw status it should go to SMH page this u can even check by "http://:2381"

I can understand you r new here but thats how u learn. please read my all mail from start may be i miss something here or there.
Thanks for asking question please try to assign points and appreciate more people to come and answer.

Re: How to configure psp on linux server

hi ajax,

Sorry for the late reply. I do encounter the same problem when i install the psp. I used ./install.sh --nui -f which also prompts me for the nfs. If i use merely ./install, it seems that not all the components get installed.

It's quite complicated to use..haha....are u able to provide me your email so that i can contact u direct?

Re: How to configure psp on linux server

Hi Ajax,
these are some of the things that i discover in the installation.
when i do an ./install.sh -nui
there are several fields that i need to change for it to work slightly better.
As below

The hpsmh-2.1.11-197.x86_64.rpm component requires input:
Please enter the Operating System (OS) Group Names for Administrator level access. (Max 5 names, separated by semicolon or space) []:

The hpsmh-2.1.11-197.x86_64.rpm component requires input:
Please enter the Operating System (OS) Group Names for Operator level access. (Max 5 names, separated by semicolon or space) []:

The hpsmh-2.1.11-197.x86_64.rpm component requires input:
Please enter the Operating System (OS) Group Names for User level access. (Max 5 names, separated by semicolon or space) []:

The hpsmh-2.1.11-197.x86_64.rpm component requires input:
Allow Local Access? (Yes/No) [NO]: yes

The hpsmh-2.1.11-197.x86_64.rpm component requires input:
Local Access Type: :

Anonymous
Administrator

Please enter selection exactly as it appears above. [Default = Anonymous]
=> Administrator

The hpsmh-2.1.11-197.x86_64.rpm component requires input:
Allow Anonymous Access? (Yes/No)) [NO]: yes

The hpsmh-2.1.11-197.x86_64.rpm component requires input:
Trust Mode: :

TrustByCert
TrustByName
TrustByAll

Please enter selection exactly as it appears above. [Default = TrustByCert]
=> TrustByAll

I wonder whether there's any issue entering the above selection?

After which,
i changed the snmp.conf file to reflect the following

com2sec hpagent default xxxx
group hpgroup v1 hpagent
group hpgroup v2c hpagent
group hpgroup usm hpagent
view all included .1
access hpgroup "" any noauth exact all all all
trapcommunity xxxx
trapsink 172.17.166.111 xxxx
trap2sink 172.17.166.111 xxxx
informsink 172.17.166.111 xxxx
authtrapenable 1
syscontact ownerofserver
syslocation Singapore

The results were ----
I can detect the servers.
Various information like OS , syslocation were correct.

BUT ----
when i click on the system mgmt homepage, it doesnt show the individual details like processor, memory etc, it just shows
"no failed/degraded items "

Need your guidance on this.
