Managing Firewall Devices....HW Failures

i have read the paper on managing Firewall devices. Looking for an easy mean to manage system behind the firewall so that HW failure events are detected by the CMS. Obviously we cannot use SNMP....but what about polling of the systems to identify HW failures? What ports should be enabled on the firewall?

I'm not sure what you mean. Polling would be via SNMP as well. At this time, it really isn't viable to manage a ProLiant server without the use of SNMP.

Is there anyway then to have HW monitoring of server behind firewalls? Is polling also dependant upon SNMP? How should a firewall device be managed then without SNMP for HW alerts?

What Firewall device are you talking about?
If the device is an HP ProLiant server you attach iLO's NIC to a separate, non-firewalled VLAN and configure the iLO to forward OS traps.
