Red X for performance

Hi,

I am playing around with the 5 free PMP licenses in SIM 5.1. I have two servers setup right now. One I can get performance data from, but the other just shows a red X and gives this message when I click on it:

A critical status in the Performance (PF) column could indicate that PMP was unable to retrieve the required information from the server. PMP attempts to retrieve the required information at least twice before reporting the critical status.

Performing any of the following actions may bring the session back to a normal status:
Verify that the monitored server is up and running.
Verify that the network connection between the monitored server and the middle-tier server is open in both directions (ping).
Restart all Insight Management agents on the monitored server.
Verify that the monitored server meets the minimum requirements (Refer to the HP ProLiant Essentials Performance Management Pack Support Matrix).
Restart the monitoring session through PMP Administration page. To access PMP Administration page, go to Systems Insight Manager console menu and click on Options->Performance Management Pack Options->Configuration.
Set the sample rate or data collection interval of the server to the minimum value in order to reduce the status update latency.

The server in question is a DL380 G3 running Windows 2003. It has the 7.51 agents on it and is not behind a FW. In other words, it looks like I have met all the requirements for PMP to work with it. I have tried restarting all the agents and even rebooted the SIM server (for a different reason) but still just shows a red X.

Any suggestions?

Re: Red X for performance

Oops - it is actually a DL380 G4 (not G3) and it has Windows 2003 SP1 installed on it.

Re: Red X for performance

SNMP is important for PMP to work correctly - no idea why.
You can also create a pmplog.txt file in the pmp directory which may help in diagnosis.

Re: Red X for performance

Thanks.

I have verified SNMP is setup correctly.

I do not have a PMPLOG.TXT file in the PMP directory (c:\Program Files\HP\Performance Management Pack 4).

Thanks

Re: Red X for performance

Just create the file manually and pmp will start writing to it.
I've also just updated to ver 4.6, which version of PMP are you running?
I'm struggling to find the release notes to see if there's a difference in supported OSes.

Re: Red X for performance

Hmmm - help/about shows 4.3...thought SIM 5.1 brought down the latest/greatest :)

I will look for the update on HP's site and try to update.

Good tip. Thanks

Re: Red X for performance

Before you do - are you on HPSIM 5.1 SP1?
If you're on PMP 4.3 I think you may not have SP1, which I believe includes PMP 4.5.
SP1 may be a pre-requisite.
This is what we have from the HPSIM Help.

Re: Red X for performance

Yes - I am on 5.1 SP1 (which is why I was confused about the older version of PMP being on my system):

Re: Red X for performance

Just checked - 4.3 was the one that came with 5.1 SP1.
The install of PMP 4.6 didn't go that smoothly here. It didn't populate HPSIM with the columns and entries under Options etc.
I ended up using Add/Remove Programs to remove it, deleted the old PMP database manually (we don't keep performance data usually) and installing from scratch - which worked.

Re: Red X for performance

You may go through pmplog.txt to get to the details of the issue.

Thanks.
