SIM 6.3 move installation to another Server and OS

Hi there,

we run SIM 6.3 on Windows Server 2003 at the moment. A new server with 2012 R2 is already online, what is the best way to move the installation to the new server and upgrade to 7.3 (which is possible according to this PDF http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04029250.pdf

Any help is appreciated :-)

Marcus

Hello Andrew,

sounds good, what I don't understand is that you mention that the upgrade is not supported from 6.2 to 7.2.

According to the PDF http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04029250.pdf it should be possible.

Do you still porpose to do a fresh install and the import the nodes?

Thanks in advance, Marcus

Re: SIM 6.3 move installation to another Server and OS

Hello again,

If i read this manual correct you need 6.3 and up (i see 6.2 and 6.3 in your message)

So if you have 6.3 it should work.

Re: SIM 6.3 move installation to another Server and OS

Andrew, we have 6.3 on Windows Server 2003.

So should we upgrade on the old OS to 7.3 and the move the installation to Windows Server 2012 R2?

If yes, what is the best way to move?

Cheers

Re: SIM 6.3 move installation to another Server and OS

Hello again,

The advantage of a new install and leaving in intact is that you have no downtime and you can migrate in your own pase.

Do you have a large setup or is it small? If you have SIM running on a virtual server and local SQL you can always create a snapshot. If you have a physical server and or remote SQL and want to update the OS I would setup a new server and migrate.

Copy your credentials from the old to the new.

Export your nodes with mxnode -a > c:\nodes.txt

Import the nodes in the new SIM setup.

Set one server to have a trust with both the old and new SIM server.

Replicate the trusts and if you want the other settings like VCA/VCRM and SNMP.

Reset the WBEM subscriptions on the new server.

Recreate any custom tools that you might have or config settings like forwarding or cleanup jobs.

Kind regards,

Andrew
