SIM and ESX 3.0.2

I have an issue with trying to get Insight Manager working on my ESX servers.

I have installed the agents and configured them and that all looks fine. They appear within my insight server. If i send a generic trap from the ESX server it appears within the insight server. Same with if i remove the power from one of the PSU's it shows up within Insight Manager.

However I do not get any mails when these events occur.

I get mails from any failures from my Windows boxes, so I know that the Insight Server does send them out. It just does not seem to send them from the ESX box.

Any suggestions on where I need to look or what this could be?
Thanks
Arun

Re: SIM and ESX 3.0.2

Hi Arun -

Login to the System Management Homepage (SMH) on your ESX server and go to Settings --> SNMP Configuration -->

Below is what my SNMP Configuration looks like:

# Following entries were added by HP Insight Management Agents at
# Wed May 23 05:11:12 CDT 2007
dlmod cmaX /usr/lib/libcmaX.so
rwcommunity public 127.0.0.1
rocommunity public localhost
rwcommunity private HPSIM_Server_Name_Here
rocommunity public
trapcommunity public
trapsink HPSIM_Server_Name_Here
syscontact root@localhost (edit snmpd.conf)
syslocation South St. Paul room1 (edit snmpd.conf)

# ---------------------- END --------------------
# Sample snmpd.conf containing VMware MIB module entries.

# This is a simple snmpd.conf that may help you test SNMP.
# It is not recommended for production use. Consult the
# snmpd.conf(5) man pages to set up a secure installation.

# VMware MIB modules. To enable/disable VMware MIB items
# add/remove the following entries.
dlmod SNMPESX /usr/lib/vmware/snmp/libSNMPESX.so

Hope that helps!

Re: SIM and ESX 3.0.2

Mark,
The VMM Pack doesn't provide the hardware monitoring. That's provided by the Proliant Support pack. It's a different set of agents and works in a similar manner to the agents on a windows server.

Part of the installation of the PSP installs and configures SNMP.
You can pre-configure this using a file.
All details are in the README.txt file supplied with the tar file.

Re: SIM and ESX 3.0.2

I don't install the psp on vm's for one there's no hardware to identify..

so how do you make sure you vm's are monitored ? I wish hp had just a mib kit that you could use for insight manager to get the vm's understood.

Re: SIM and ESX 3.0.2

I use wbem to monitor the guests.
I enable wbem globally and keep the global credentials blank.
I use server specific wbem settings for the vm's.
I also make use of the mxnodesecurity program in a batch file whenever I need to do a bulk change of the passwords.
