SIM and PSP agent on VM

Greetings Gurus,

I'm setting up a farm of ProLiant DL G5s and G6s to host a bunch of VMs. I'm using Oracle VM Server which is based on a minimal RHEL x86 5U4 and Xen.

I'd like to monitor the servers and am thinking about using a seperate / stand alone CMS install of SIM to monitor the physical servers. My understanding is that after getting the CMS install of SIM set-up that I would install PSP on the physical servers making up the VM farm and the CMS could then monitor them.

First question, is this a valid strategy?

Second question, if this is a valid strategy then what is the minimum PSP install that is needed? Which specific rpm(s) from the PSP are needed to install on the VM servers so that the CMS can monitor them?

NOTE - the current hpsum from the PSP does not run on Oracle VM Server but I'm nearly certain I can install the individual rpm(s) If I knew what the minimum install requires.

How can I accomplish this?

Yeah sounds good :-)

The minimal rpms I install (on SLES) are
- hp-health
- hp-snmp-agents
- hp-ilo (not needed in newer distributions)

Sorry forgot, you can get the individual rpms from the BSC
1) http://hp.com/go/bsc
2) Download drivers and software
3) use one of your ProLiants as a product
4) select the appropiate OS
5) select the software (when you click on a item you should see the rpm name)

Thank you Michael. Could you please elaborate on when hp-ilo is needed and why. We have a combination of Proliant G5 and G6 servers. They all have iLO2 and are configured to use the "Shared Network Port" with "Virtual LAN" enabled. We are not using the dedicated iLO port although we could. We will be using the current version of SIM for the CMS as well.

If your Linux distribution has a 'hpilo' kernel module, then you don't need the hp-ilo RPM from HP. They got their driver into the mailine kernel, so one less RPM to worry about :-)

Depending on which distribution you select on the Business Support Center it should show you the driver as a download if needed.

I see, then in our case I will need to install it since the Oracle VM server does not include anything but the bare essentials. Thanks again Michael.
