SNMP Settings - Data Collection Interval

Hi Folks,

Just wondering, what does everyone have set for their data collection intervals on their servers? Ours is the default 2 minutes on all server. We use SIM and HP OvO, and we receive alerts for a server going down pretty much instantly with OvO but SIM will only tick in at the next interval so could take up to two minutes. Also sometimes a server could reboot and be back up before the interval so we don't receive any alerts.

Just wondering has anyone receive performance or network related problems with lowering the SNMP interval to a lower value such as 30 seconds? We have approximately 100 servers.

Thanks

Re: SNMP Settings - Data Collection Interval

You can't be talking about Data Collection--the default Data Collection task is set at every 2 weeks.

Server Status Polling is default at 5 minutes; are you saying you changed it to 2? The key thing is not to let the jobs overlap. In other words, a new Server Status Polling job should not be starting before the previous one completes. Check to see how long on average it takes to do (with various other things running) and don't set it below that.

It's also possible that you're taking about the SNMP Data Collection Interval visible in the HP Management Agents applet in Control Panel. This is the frequency by which the SNMP layer updates its data from the underlying agents and can be set as low as 5 seconds--but this has nothing to do with the frequency with which HP SIM checks to see system status.

Thanks for the reply.

"SNMP Data Collection Interval visible in the HP Management Agents applet in Control Panel" is what I was talking about. If that does not change the amount of time that servers talk to SIM then that's fine we'll leave it at that.

As per above.
