SNMP settings needed or advised on monitored 2003 server with HPSIM5.1

What do I need to set in SNMP on a monitored server? What should I set? I used to think I needed to set different read and write community strigs but is there other things?
Thanks,
Eric

Opinions vary I guess :)

I always set a READ and WRITE string on my servers. But from what I remember, I think only a READ string is needed. The WRITE string is used internally by the agents and is never broadcast across the network (at least by the HP stuff) - so maybe it is needed but only for certain functions.

Anyway - I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe this is correct.

You can get by with RO community name for discovery.
I think you need a RW community name when you want to set the thresholds in the agents.

The other items are an entry for localhost and the HPSIM Server in the Allowed Hosts field.

Also, if you create a read-only string and do a configure or repair on a server, it will create a unique read-write string for you.
