VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

When trying to update VCRM 7.5.1, I am getting the following errors:

Error: unable to connect.
Unknown error: 12057
Invalid HTTP status 403 trying to read file remote file C:\Windows\TEMP\wh8F95.tmp.
Error downloading remote file http://kmcs-sec-dwnld-pro.glb.itcs.hp.com/kmcs-web/swd/public/download/ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL62160/sy-149941-1/VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt to local file C:\Windows\TEMP\wh8F95.tmp

This occurs whether direct across the internet, or via Proxy.

From the look of the file saved in the TEMP folder, only 500 bytes of VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt are being served then the file truncates.

I have tried restarting VCRM and used multiple internet links and from different physical locations in the UK. All result in the same.

Did you also try to download a SPP, unpack it and put it in a nee folder under the VCRM directory? You can download by hand and SER what happens. Also check for a virusscanner or simply diskspace. Or clear the VCRM folder and try again.
Kind regards,

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

Thanks for your reply, but not really relevant to the problem.

Manually placing a SPP file or it's contents into the VCRM repository folder is not going to fix a download issue.

However, I can confirm that some updates I manually placed in the folder are being added to the VCRM software list.

Virus Scanner has been turned off to rule that out. Disk space is not an issue - I did state that I tried this from multiple locations (i.e. different servers physically located in different locations).

Again, clearing the VCRM repository folder is not relevant to the problem.

Both the server and VCRM have been restarted with the same issue.

Error 403 is forbidden, could there be something wrong with you support account for downloading SPPS ? I don't use the autodownload so am not sure if you need a support account. Or in an other link i read that someone had a firewall issue with port 21.

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

Yes, you would have thought it was something like that.

VCRM uses a "Entitlement Token" to validate. You generate a token from a link it provides and paste it in.

The other requirement is that you need a supported device linked to your HP Passport profile - I have a few supported devices so this should be ok.

Thinking it might be the token expiring or something, I generated a new one. Using the new code makes no difference.

After a lot of attempts, I have managed to get one site to start downloading updates, but I can't change the frequency of the downloads due to this error. Every time you try to "Finish" on the Automatic Update Settings page, you get this error.

Very puzzling.

I am in the process of logging a case with HPE, but going by the responses I am getting, I think I have a more realistic chance of winning the lottery!

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

Well, the server that started the download did manage some files, but burped at a lot of others. The log doesn't look very good. Certainly looks like an overloaded server at HPE's end...

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

This is the reason why i download the spp by hand. I've had more than my share of trouble of trying to access the HP. Website to download files.

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

Looks like HP may have released a fix over the weekend. Unfortunately, their Support Alert email link results in a 404 error (I see a trend here!)

Here's the link to 7.5.3.0:

http://h20564.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_2820811e0de649969b1fd8d45b

However, installing the update doesn't look promising as it results in the original error in the title of this thread :(

I'm guessing the HP/HPE split is still bringing out some web hosting issues.

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

As an update... HP have come back to me from the case I raised...

"We have received an update from L2 stating they have checked in the lab and was able to see the same error code: 12057 that you had shared before.
The issue is being currently checked from the L2.
We will keep you posted once we have received further updates on the same."

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

Hi,
I have exactly the same issue on my side, are there any news from HPE?

I`ve reinstalled the VCRM several times, installed the new one, cleaned up the repository, nothing has  fixed the problem.

Downloading every newly released driver manually is not really an option, we had a lot of different server types and it waiste really much time to keep the repository updated manually....

Ciao

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

Today's update from HPE's L2 team:

"I have reproduced the issue on other systems in the lab and am working on identifying the root cause.
I am seeing the same issue as what you are seeing in your lab.
It's not the same error code as what is being seen at the customer's site, but it is consistent.
I will update this case with the root cause or further action plan later this week."

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

Update from HPE:

Workaround solution:
* Stop VCRM service

  1. Go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Compaq\Version Control Repository Manager” in registry
  2. Right click on “AutoDownloadCatalogIndexUrl” and change to http protocol from https in "https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib/software2/COL3293/catalogindex.xml” value data.
    -> http://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib/software2/COL3293/catalogindex.xml
  3. Right click on “AutoDownloadCatalogUrl” and change to http protocol from https in “https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib/software2/COL3293/catalog.xml“ value data.
    ->“http://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib/software2/COL3293/catalog.xml
  4. Restart VCRM service.

Seems to resolve registering with the Entitlement Token, still waiting for Catalog Validation to complete before attempting a download

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

Hi,

that works for me, thanks for your investigations.

Re: VCRM unable to download VCRM_VERIFICATION.txt file, only 500 bytes served

I have the same issue and I have tried changing the registry entries but on restarting the VCRM Service the "AutoDownloadCatalogUrl" entry automatically changes back to "https".

Any suggestions
