Windows 23k/SQL 2005 Cluster & SIM

Hopefully someone here has does this already. I have a Windows 2003 Server/SQL 2005 Server cluster that runs on a pair of BL460c blades.

There is also the latest PSP on each underlying node of the cluster.

I have as well made sure that cluster monitoring has been enabled in the HP control panel applet.

After doing a discovery limited to the IP addresses of the two nodes and the "virtual node" I end up with the following.

Each node shows up under "All systems". Their system names are correct and associated with the correct cluster.

Each node's System Type property is set to unknown, and all of the associated system properties are blank.

The CW (Contract/Warranty) information is good.

However, the servers are not associating with their management processors (ilo), nor are the version control agents functional.

I also cannot run the tool at:

Tools >> System Information >> Cluster monitor

Can someone enlighten me as to what I have missed or not done? This is the first time I have needed to enable cluster monitoring.

It sounds as if the cluster monitor agent is not active on your nodes. Go to Control Panel, HP Management Agents, and confirm the Cluster Agent is in the Active Agents column. If not, move it over on each of the nodes, and restart the agents when prompted.

That's the first thing I checked Neil, cluster monitoring is there.

By any chance, do the SIM agents need to be configured as a cluster resource?

Under the SNMP properties Security tab, make sure the IP address of the SIM server is present under Accept SNMP packets from the following hosts. Your other option would be to allow SNMP packets from any host.

This is probably the setting that needs to be adjusted since these cluster nodes are showing up as unknown.

I completely missed that in the original email. Sorry about that.

Once this setting has been changed on each node, go to the SIM console, click Options, Identify systems, and select your cluster nodes. You should then be able to see the details of your systems.

Thanks for the help Neil.

For the purpose of troubleshooting, I set the SNMP security to any host.

I also rechecked that cluster management was enabled in the HP Agents CP applet. It was.

I then restarted all of the HP agents on both nodes.

I then deleted all reference to these nodes in SIM.

I then ran a new discovery on the two ip addresses of the nodes.

I then ran an 'identify' as you suggested. I am getting told this:

Starting identification process...
Checking for known running web servers.
Checking for System Management Home Page and other HP web agents.
Received a response from the system management homepage, this system supports SMH.
Checking for WBEM support on system.
This system does not have any SMI-S CIMOM installed
This system doesn´t have a server CIMOM installed, or cannot connect to it using all credentials specified
Running WBEM rules based identification.
Cannot get ComputerSystem WBEM/WMI data from the system
Running WS-Man identification.
Checking for SNMP support on system.
The system responded to a SNMP request, it supports SNMP.

********
Running SNMP base Cluster identification using common cluster MIB.
This was not a system with the common cluster MIBs supported.
********

********
Running HP ProLiant management agent identification
System does not have the SNMP ProLiant Server (foundation) agents installed.
********

Etc.. Etc...

I would imagine that I would need to get this repaired before SIM will work properly. I am going to ask the cluster admin to uninstall the existing agents and update each server with 7.90a.

Do you have any other suggestions?

You may want to make sure you have added in the cluster IP address.

Are you now able to see information other than Unknown?

Thanks again for the help. By adding the IP of the cluster in the discovery, that fixed 'identify' not finding a cluster.

I still have the underlying problem that 'identify' doesn't believe that the foundation agent is running on the individual nodes for some reason.

I am getting ready to go over and speak with the cluster admin, and re-install the Insight Agents.

Hopefully that will fix it.

This is working now.

The solution was a complete uninstall of the SIM agents, and then a reinstall.

For some reason, the agents as installed were not running foundation agents. Although it was up and running, it wasn't responding to anything.

Once I did the clean install and onto the cluster and ran discovery, it came up properly.
