backup

backup

Hello.
I receive this error when I backup HP SIM:
Database Log truncated: database: Insight_v50_0_21127515.
The backup software is MS Small Business Server native backup.
How can I avoid this? Is it dangerous?
HP SIM had been installed using full SQL 2000 (not MSDE) SP4.
Thank you for your time, kind regards,
Riccardo

Re: backup

Riccardo,

I think you have this message because your Insight_v50_0_21127515 database is in full recovery model - all transactions are logged, and the transaction log is not truncated unless you back it up.

IMHO, with HPSIM database usually you don't need transaction logs and
I suggest to change recovery model for Insight_v50_0_21127515 database to simple mode - the simple recovery model used to automatically truncate the transaction log.

But even if you remain with full recovery model - you can just ignore message "Database Log truncated: database: Insight_v50_0_21127515"

Re: backup

Thank you Igor. The strange problem is that there is nothin in the backup folder of SQL that manage the database backup while the script that launches ntbackup apparently has no option pertaining the backup of SQL.
So where are set those option regarding the log truncation?

I don't have any experience with ntbackup (we work with Veritas backup exec), but AFAIK ntbackup doesn't have SQL backup agent. Therefore it is really strange that you have "Database Log truncated" message. But probably you have "maintenance plan" defined on your SQL server - check ->Management->Database maintenance plans in SQL enterprise manager - you will find "Transaction log backup" tab as one of the options.

Anyway, I think if you move "Insight_v50_0_21127515" database to Simple recovery model - the message will go away - see "Setting the SQL Server 2000 database recovery model to Simple" part

Re: backup

Thank you Igor, another usefull answer.
There is no maintenance plan set but now I know how to change the backup mode to simple. Thank you very much.
