cannot make use of HPSIM/VMM with ESX

We have HPSIM 5.1SP1 w. hotfixes up to 016, ESX 3.5 with HP agents 7.91 installed and VMM2.2 . All the necessary ports were opened on ESX. SNMP communities on ESX set immediately after agents installation. The server is discovered by HPSIM, few existing VMs discovered as well; the VMM license assigned to it (and shown as such in license manager) but the license is not active. Digging up I found out that the S/N (and some other SMBIOS provided info) is not discovered by the agent on ESX host, which could prevent HPSIM/VMM to work properly. Any ideas why this happened and how to resolve?

The HP Agents are not involved - although you should really be running version 8.1.1 is the latest.

There have been similar posts in here about getting to ESX to work.
Here's a similar thread, look at things like the VMM certificate taht needs to be loaded. There's a link to a quick setup guide.

The version of VMM you are running is also very old and does not support ESX 3.5. You might want to update to the latest version of VMM (which is 3.5) -- http://www.hp.com/go/vmmanage.

in the meantime it looks like the problem was sold with several VMM agents restarts on the ESX host. I did not have high hopes as we did that previously, but ... :-)
