Clone HDD RAID5 onto SSD

Hi,

I did setup a RAID5 on SAS 12G HDDs DAS, connected with an P440ar Smart Array Controller.

Since we want to replace them before even one fails and we would give three SAS SSD a try.

To minimize downtime i thought about replacing one disc at a time. But manuals told me, that the discs dont can be mixed by type. Is that right?

If thats right, i was told RAID Menu after POST offers not only to create new RAIDs, but to copy their contents. Is that right, and could you give me some search terms, since i missed that point in the manual.

I was told by the distributor, that i have to disable or remove the battery, which brings me to the next point: They were not sure if the battery is to be disabled or removed if the other HDDs stay in there, for different use.

And first things first: I would like to test the new drives, startet iLO but could not find such a routine. Am I missing something?

I would really enjoy to read your answers, even if you can answer just one of them. I know: There were many. I'm a one maid for all IT guy in a small (30ppls) company, and storage management isn't my 9to5.

Kind regards,

Udo

Re: Clone HDD RAID5 onto SSD

You cannot mix HDD and SSD in a RAID.

Just consider to use a software cloning software from the running OS.

Hope this helps!

Re: Clone HDD RAID5 onto SSD

I don't wanna mix up SSD and HDD in a RAID, but want to know if its possible to replicate one to another, online.

Did i forget to mention thats a Hyper-V Host? Do you know a tool that is able to accomplish the task to clone the Hyper-V Host and all its running guests?

Kind regards,

Udo

Hi,

You should not mix different type of drives in an array(Raid), however you can have them in different array/raid.

Replacing existing drive with different drive type is not recommended, instead if you have a space/empty drive bays then install the new desired drive and create a new Raid.

later you can do Hyper-V Storage Migration (to the the volumes on the new raid)

Hopes this helps!
