DL360gen9 and E5-2697R v4

Looks like this DL360 gen9 does not cooperate with a pair of E5-2697R v4 well. Origionally an E5-2697R v4 has a 45M L3 cache (ONE PIECE) rather than a 2*22.5 L3 cache. These CPUs performed well in vendor's diagnostic sequences after I sent them back, which are both 45M L3 in CPU-z, one piece. But this server's BIOS only identified and used one 22.5M L3 cache and CPU-z shows 2*22.5M. What should I do to make this board identify the full L3s?

https://community.intel.com/t5/Processors/What-does-quot-R-quot-suffix-in-Intel-Xeon-E5-2697R-v4-mean/td-p/713555

This link to a related discussion in intel forum also make things seem to be make things a little bit more clear, but that's not all. I knew from multiple datasheets that the 2697R v4 is a side product of a kind of intel herd server, which seems to have L3 normal cache 45MB rather than L3 smart cache(this is my inductive reasoning from the datasheet of E5-2699R v4 and the fact that intel did not mention this CPU's cache as 'Smart Cache' in the quick spec). And the problem might also occur  because I was running these CPUs in single channel ( 2* Hynix 16G DDR4 2400MHz, one per processor), which also seems to be quite different from a server's running environment... But how can I piece everything above together? I could add some memory to figure out whether it's a matter of RAM channels, but what if that doesn't work? Or, can anyone simply tell me that HPE dl360/380 gen9 does not support Non-Smart L3 cache well?

Hi @hjiang3 ,

Could you please share the Processor Part number if available.

Also screenshots from where the Cache Details are Seen.

Thank you

Hi @ksram

Glad that it's been noticed. These are all the information that I recorded before I return them to the vendor.WeChat Image_20201003235620.jpg

The vendor used an ASUS board to gain this result. If there's a simple result that this platform does not support non-smart L3 caches well or something other than this(that makes these parts incompatible), I will ask for a refund and purchase a pair of E5-2620 v3 for 100RMB/ea.server S/N and PIDserver S/N and PID

Re: DL360gen9 and E5-2697R v4

This problem is not just for my case, because it might add something to further using manual. What is supported and what is not, or... maybe a more compatible board design to make future products more competitive.

Re: DL360gen9 and E5-2697R v4

Hi @hjiang3 ,

Thank you for sharing the information.

I understand the concern, but the best would be to check the Quickspecs and the Options part for the Server to get the details of the Supported components.

Quickspecs : https://h20195.www2.hpe.com/v2/getdocument.aspx?docname=c04375623#

Spare Parts : https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-c04444425

Option Parts : https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-c04444424

Let us know if this was helpful or if you need more information.

Also if you could share the xxxxxx-B21 Number or xxxxxx-001 Number of the Processor we can check if its compatible by using Part Surfer : https://partsurfer.hpe.com/

Once you enter the -001 number you will see option "Click Here to see the list of HPE Products that Part Number  xxxxxx-001 is used in." which will display the results. of Server supports that component.

Thank you

Ram
