HP ML350 G6 + p410i upgrade to ML350e G8 P420

Hi All,

I'm upgrading my home server from a ML350 G6 to ML350e G8 because of the power usage of the G6 is now heavy even when idealling. (I know not new tech, but its a home server for testing stuff on)

Question:

I have a RAID 5 setup using P410i controller with 6 2TB HDD's on the ML350 G6

Can I simply take the drives from the G6 + p410i and put them in the G8 + p420 without losing all the data on the array already?

I've read multiple posts saying it should be fine and a couple saying their is a good risk, but the PDF's say they the controllers and upgrade compatible so i'm assuming this should all work, just by changing them from one server to the new server?

Thank you in advance, all advice is appreciated

Cheers,
Joe

In theory it works, the new smart array controller will pick up the configuration from the disks (install in same order!) and keep going.

But in real life the old disks are using old disk carriers, the Gen8 and newer disks are using the new disk carriers.

Installing old carriers in a newer server may damage the disk backplane!

New carrier:

872477-B21

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Thanks Torsten,

I've purchased in carriers for all drives to be on safe side

Fingers crossed then

1. Put in new carriers
2. Place HDD's in G8 in same order as in G6

Then i asume it will re-sync, etc or do whatever it needs to make everything work well

Cheers,

Joe
