HPE Proliant DL20 Gen10 - Terrible Fan Noise

Hello,

The fans are running excessively strong on the HP Proliant DL20 GEN10 Server that I am deploying.

I updated all firmware and BIOS to the latest version available via the latest SPP (April 2021) and also online via the internet with Intelligent Provisionning.

By removing the original SSD hard drives (hpe logo - supplied by hpe) and inserting conventional (mechanical) hard drives, the problem of excessively spinning fans disappears.

As soon as I reinsert the hpe SSD hard drives, the problem reoccurs.

Has anyone encountered this problem before? Does a solution exist?

Hi,

Can you check the SSD model number and see if it requires any firmware update?

Here is an article which might help (not specific to your server model & SSD).

Re: HPE Proliant DL20 Gen10 - Terrible Fan Noise

Hi,

Thanks for your answer.

Below the model harddisk:

HPE Model SM883 2.5" 480GB SSD (SATA 6.0Gbps)
HPE P/N P02761-002
Firmware HPG3

Note there is no error in ILO System Information, all peripherals are correctly identified, no error or warning are reported.

Re: HPE Proliant DL20 Gen10 - Terrible Fan Noise

Hi,

The part number P02761-002 should have a model number as MK000480GWSSC.

For this model, there is an advisory to update the firmware to HPG2 because it had some temperature issues, but you are already on HPG3.

It could be the ambient temperature.  Have a look at this document and refer to page 7 & 8.

Re: HPE Proliant DL20 Gen10 - Terrible Fan Noise

Thansk for your answer.

The temperature ambient is correct, 20°c.

Note that if I replace SSD Hard disks by non SSD Hard disks, the issue disappear

Hello,

VMWare ESXi 7.0.2 Update 2 has been installed with the « HPE Customized ISO Image » ; A test was also done by directly installing Windows Server 2019 on it via Intelligent Provisionning.

In both case, the latest Agentless Management Service (AMS) was installed and an execution test executed with success.

Three SSD Hard disks are installed in the server.

Below the firmware deployed on the server:
