Is the APC UPS range hp supported?

One of our clients has bought [unfortunately not from us] an rp7410 & VA7400

They need a UPS

I can supply a rackable APC UPS SMART 5kVA with PowerChute software [part # unknown to me], but I am unsure on...

1] Will this be HP-UX compatible?
2] Is 5kVA sufficient come the day they've fully loaded their above system with add-ons?
3] Will HP support this product?

My knowledge of UPS products/technology is as shallow as a puddle so your input will be very much appreciated

Thank you

Re: Is the APC UPS range hp supported?

1) Yes, it should work. It will take some fussing with the ups_conf, but it should.
2) Probably not.
3) Unlikely.

Re: Is the APC UPS range hp supported?

There should not be a problem and powerchute software will run on HPUX fine. You can call your rep were you purchased the rp7410 or find the info and see what the power draw is on the unit and calculate your load on the ups.

Re: Is the APC UPS range hp supported?

Hi Mike,

I can help you with a couple of your questions.

1) You'll need to check with APC, but I believe there's a HP-UX version of their PowerChute s/w. Just remember to disable ups_mond if you're going to be using other UPS software - it could get a bit unpredictable otherwise!

3) To the best of my knowledge we wouldn't support PowerChute - it's a 3rd party product.

Alternative suggestions: You could read up on HP's UPS Manager II - this _may_ support 3rd party UPS, I believe the product is supported by our German RC. Otherwise you're left with comparing the command sets of the PowerTrust and APC UPS to see if ups_mond would work - not a very nice option I'm afraid!

Darren.

Pete & Ken:
Thank you

Darren:
Useful, but I'm puzzled

HP no longer badge a UPS

I've spoken to PSL who are our HP Distributer
They now offer the APC product
It comes with a support option using APC engineers

My client is very reluctant to have a product that isn't supported by HP

So in future it will not be a one-stop-shop when a support issue arises?
End user will have to decide whether a particular problem should be pointed at HP or APC?

Re: Is the APC UPS range hp supported?

Hi all

FYI
HP have told me that they'll
"support" the APC UPS range

HP will put the support back to APC
HP will front-end it
HP will have the headache of deciding which engineer visits

Re: Is the APC UPS range hp supported?

Hi Mike,

I had a quick search on hp.com and found the following link to our PowerTrust UPS:

http://www.hp.com/racksolutions/prodinfo/power_access/ups_ux.html

There's also info on how to buy them, so I guess we're still selling them. ;)

It sounds like your distributor is being a one-stop-shop if they're offering the APC support. It should be _relatively_ easy for them to determine whether a problem is HP or APC as you'll be running APC's PowerChute s/w which will be supported by APC. Otherwise I'd suggest you speak to your HP contract administrator (being a techie rather than a contracts person I'm not aware if we offer a one-stop-shop solution where we then call the 3rd party if needed) to discuss the contracts side further.

Hope that helps remove some of the confusion.

regards,

Darren.
