Regarding dual core single cpu machines..
what is dual core machines?
what is the different between 'dual core single cpu' machines and 'single core single cpu machines'?.
what are advantage of 'dual core single cpu machines' compared to 'single core single cpu machines'?
Thanks
Srinu.

Re: Regarding dual core single cpu machines..
Dual core :- Two processors in one core. Core is the CPU. It means, you will have two processors in single die.

Re: Regarding dual core single cpu machines..
Dual core is the technology with which on the same CPU board you have 2 processor chips; where as single core means a single processor chip on the CPU board.
Dual core - its like accomodating 2 processors on the same board.
Advantage : Reduced no. of slots required on your server to accomodate more processors.
Drawback - The cache memory is shared by both the processors as it on the same CPU board - this may introduce some latency compared to single processor accessing the cache - but nowadays the new processor boards will have an increased amount of cache compared to previous configurations.
Hope this clarifies,

Re: Regarding dual core single cpu machines..
You cannot compare performance as such -
The reason you cannot compare performance directly is because say CPU of type PA8900 is dual core with 1GHz, now you do not have the same exactly same spec processor coming on a single core.
Another adv that the 2 core may have is since they will be using the same cache - say 2 processes requiring to communicate across the CPUs will be faster incase they are running on the 2 cores on the same CPU board.
