UPS battery producing smoke

Hi all
How long can we use an UPS before we need to change the battery?
Yesterday I have an UPS battery producing smoke! No joke..
We have to move the whole rack out of the server room.

Kenny:

Generally, UPS batteries can last at least a year, if not 2 and sometimes 3 or more. It depends on the usage, the maintainance, the amount of times it discharges, lots of factors determine the life of the batteries.

If your battery is smoking, it is definitely time to change it. Smoking is not a normal reaction to being "ready for replacement", there is probably just something wrong. Hos the UPS been on? for how long? Was it recently turned on from being off for a long time?

What other information can you give?

Re: UPS battery producing smoke

The UPS is at least 8 years old. I will replace the UPS and the battery.
The worst thing is that I even have servers and UPS that are that old :-(
Just a bit upset that I have to deal with these antique servers. I just hope that my server room does not burn down one day. This will cause hundreds of jobs

This is the perfect oppurtunity to make the case that an upgrade is absolutely necessary. If your servers are mission critical to the survival of your company, then even a small investment into the companies future is better than dealing with hardware that is "about the fail" or "is failing".

I wish you luck and hope that you obtain some new equipment soon.
