web console, which port to authenticate?

Anyone got any idea what port web consoles use when they are authenticating?

I've set up a web console to be accessed via, I can access the intial login screen ok.
But when you try to login it is not connecting.

Cheers

George

Re: web console, which port to authenticate?

Hi,

The web console authentication is via HTTP/80. However, once authenticated, a telnet/23 connection is attempted.

Refer to the following detailed analysis for more information:

Hope this helps. Regards.

Thanks for the link Steven.

Not to happy if i have to open up telnet port, to get access though.

Makes security a bit awkward!

Re: web console, which port to authenticate?

George,

Are you trying to access the web console remotely and through a firewall? Is the web console built into the server or an external one? Is it the branded HP one or Arula?

Re: web console, which port to authenticate?

Hallo Harry.

I do have a firewall on the pc that i'm using as a router between cable modem and the web console on internal lan, which is why i needed to know which ports were used.

I'm using wingate to route between int/ext ip's.

The web console is a standard external hp one connected to my faithful I50.

I want this to be a test server, that people can use to practice admin tasks.

But i dont want it to be abused, i'm not having any n/w connections out from it, hence the web console.

Have fun

Re: web console, which port to authenticate?

have opened up port on firewall and enable routing for port 23 on wingate.
But still just getting logon in progess afted uid and passwd is entered.

Any ideas out there?

Re: web console, which port to authenticate?

Hi George,

First thing I'd verify is that a standard terminal works as the console (just to rule out console port issues).

Re: web console, which port to authenticate?

Tried a normal console and it's ok.

Shooved a packet sniffer on and noticed that it uses variable ports for the java stuff, which is a major pain.

Trying to come up with a plan b at the moment.

Cheers
