Different slot, different connector, different speed.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: what is difference between "PCI-E" and "PCI-X" slots

The difference is not unlike that between PCI and EISA although the analogy is not perfect. As mentioned, they are different, incompatible, I/O bus types. PCIe "replaces" PCI-X. PCIe has two shipped/shipping generations at this point, Gen1, where each "lane" runs at 2.5 GHz/250 MB/s (speed and feed, not necessarily actual) and Gen2, which clocks the lanes twice as fast.

A PCIe Gen1 x4 slot is roughly perf equivalent to a PCI-X 133 MHz slot. A PCIe Gen1 x8 slot is roughly perf equivalent to a PCI-X 266 MHz slot. "x8" here means eight "lanes."
