Extreme IT Makeover at the Houston Zoo Eliminates All Monkey Business

sansan_strozier

The Houston Zoo recently received an Extreme IT Makeover from HP, Microsoft, Intel, and Aldridge Managed IT Services. The Houston Zoo is home to more than 6,000 animals, all of which have different needs for food, housing, and medical care. In addition to caring for their animals, the zoo welcomes over 2 million guests per year to their facilities. Managing the animals, and the guests, requires not only a top-notch staff, but also a top-notch IT infrastructure to ensure everything runs smoothly.

And, that is precisely what the Extreme IT Makeover gave them!

The Houston Zoo’s new IT includes many different components. At the heart of the solution are several HP ProLiant DL180 Gen9 servers featuring Intel Xeon E5 processors. The DL180 Gen9 server delivers an optimized 2U server, designed with the right balance of expandability, performance, reliability, and manageability, all in a compact chassis. To help the zoo veterinarians and animal care takers keep track of the immense amounts of data gathered from the exhibits, the DL180 Gen9 provides ample storage capacity on demand with drive configurations ranging from 4 to 12 Large Form Factor or 8 to 16 Small Form Factor HP SmartDrives, with flexibility of LFF non-hot plug (NHP) options.

In addition, this server supports up to two Intel® Xeon® processor E5-2600 v3 processors with up to 12 cores and 16 DIMM slots of HP DDR4 SmartMemory giving the zoo staff improved performance and efficiency. To further improve efficiency, Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 was installed, allowing them to integrate across the entire IT infrastructure and giving them improved reliability and scalability.

Before the Extreme IT Makeover, the Houston Zoo lacked a mobile IT solution. Thanks to the DL180 Gen9 Server, Windows Server 2012 R2 and many HP tablets, the zoo is now equipped with complete mobility. This means when the veterinarians and staff are on the grounds caring for the animals they can record and share their data and get important information right when they need it, anytime from anywhere.

So, the next time you’re visiting the Houston Zoo, take a moment to pause and reflect how smoothly everything is running. Rest assured that HP, Microsoft, and Intel all have a hand in helping keep things organized.

Thanks to the HP team members (Kirstin Harlan, Rich Papaioannou, Jane Takeuchi, and Lucy Ellis) for making this happen along with partners from Intel (Michael Swain, Trent Boyer, Shannon Warner and Microsoft’s Shonda Anderson-Williams). And without our HP Channel Partner Aldridge IT Services, Shawn Anderson, the installation and integration would not have been possible.
