HPE and VMware drastically simplify vSAN Ready Node implementation

HPE introduces new, factory-integrated HPE vSAN Ready Node configurations on the HPE ProLiant DL300-series servers, expanding the portfolio to cover all seven vSAN profiles. (Updated 06-01-2020)

More than 80 percent of enterprises today are betting their IT future1 on a multi-cloud strategyโ€”public, private and, hybridโ€”to meet the business and workload needs in our increasingly hyperconnected world. The promises of agility, scalability, vSAN ReadyNodes-blog.jpgand cost-effectiveness along with security and governance are appealing. However, it is increasingly evident that building for multi-cloud is hardโ€”with dozens of complex choices to be made.

Public cloud is probably the simplest of the choices, but itโ€™s not always the right choice for your business or workload. Private cloud and hybrid cloud are more complex but give architectural options you canโ€™t get from public cloud vendors. However, you must make the hard choices: Do you build on a traditional IT design or opt for a converged or hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI)? Do you go down the one-size-fits-some path with an appliance or do you choose a flexible building block path? Do you aggregate and integrate the hardware and software yourself or do you work with a vendor to get it done?

Making the right choice simple

By 2023, Gartner estimates that more than two-thirds of all enterprises will be running some form of hyperconverged infrastructure, up from less than a third in 2019.2 The reasons are clear: simplified design with compute and storage on a single platform, easy and granular scaling, cloud readiness. . . and the list goes on.

For those already on the path to cloud and HCI or those considering their options, HPE and VMware have made it so simple. Available now, the new factory-integrated HPE vSAN Ready Node gives you an HPE-engineered, VMware-certified HCI solution that is preconfigured on select HPE ProLiant servers with your choice of hypervisor version, management tools, and the right balance of processor, memory, and storage options to match your workload requirements.

Building on an intelligent foundation

HPE vSAN Ready Node is a software-defined building block built on the intelligent foundation of HPE ProLiant servers. All factory-integrated HPE vSAN Ready Node offerings default to a configuration optimized for both cost and performance, specific to the vSAN profile they support. Each node has a full suite of certified options available to upgrade. You can tailor each server to fit your specific environment with the assurance that every option shown meets the minimum requirements for the respective vSAN profiles.

You now have the option to pre-install VMware vSphereโ„ข 6.7 Update 3 or vSphere 7 including relevant HPE certified drivers and firmware. If VMware vSphereยฎ 7 is chosen, HPE also provides the vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) plug-in.

Matching configurations to workloads

HPE offers the certified, pre-configured, and easy-to order HPE vSAN Ready Node to provide the fastest path to optimized workloadsโ€”delivered on platforms that provide broad scalability and flexibility for each unique environment. To accelerate your journey to hybrid cloud, these software-defined building blocks, certified under their respective VMware vSAN profile specifications, are built on the HPE ProLiant platform.

HPE vSAN Ready Node configurations are optimized to provide ideal performance on these four workloads:

  • Virtualizationโ€”The HPE ProLiant DL360 All Flash 6 with Intelยฎ Xeonยฎ Scalable processors is optimized for heavily virtualized and/or web infrastructure environments, making this solution ideal as a computing power add-on to increase output in media streaming or web serving services or to manage IT infrastructure.
  • Data management and processingโ€”The HPE ProLiant DL360 All Flash 8 with Intelยฎ Xeonยฎ Scalable processors provides a solution to data storage aimed at optimizing data management and analytics. With high disk throughput and low latency, this solution is a great addition for a variety of storage structures.
  • Accelerated infrastructureโ€”The HPE ProLiant DL380 8SFF All Flash 4 with Intelยฎ Xeonยฎ Scalable processors comes graphics-ready to optimize next-generation compute performance via dedicated coprocessors. This makes a great addition for high-end 2D/3D visualization or virtual desktop infrastructures.
  • Data warehousingโ€”The HPE ProLiant DL380 24SFF Hybrid 8 with Intelยฎ Xeonยฎ Scalable processors provides the storage needed to assist with heavy collaboration and data intensive or large analytics processing environments. Optimized for capacity with additional expansions slots available, this server is geared to handle a wide range of storage requirements.

VMware vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) simplifies physical and virtual management

The factory-integrated HPE vSAN Ready Node sets aside traditional manually driven processes and technologies, shifting to an automated, secure approach that extends optimization beyond workloads to include a tightly coupled integration of physical and virtual management.

VMware vSphere 7 offers vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM), a unified lifecycle management tool for day two operations, replacing VMware vSphereยฎ Update Managerโ„ข (VUM) functionality. vLCM delivers a single lifecycle workflow for the full HCI server stack, reducing time-to-completion for update tasks. It accomplishes this by increasing reliability and moving to a desired state model, which will monitor drift compliance and remediate.

Automated, infrastructure-aware updates and patches managed through a familiar VMwareยฎ console keep the server operating at peak efficiency.

Built-in security

Data is the lifeblood for business, and we hear again and again from customers that you want premium protection for valuable data assets. The HPE vSAN Ready Node is built on HPE ProLiant, the world's most secure industry-standard server platform. Beginning at server power-on, through real time scanning against an immutable digital fingerprint, we ensure that the hardware and firmware have not been compromised. This silicon root of trust is exclusive to HPE.

Reaching for the clouds

Many businesses today operate within a hybrid cloud infrastructure. The hybrid cloud promises to bring together the best of both worlds by enabling businesses to combine the scalability and cost effectiveness of the cloud with the performance and control that you can get from your on-premises infrastructure. However, implementing a multi-cloud strategy can increase complexity.

HPE GreenLake Central helps you run, manage, and optimize your hybrid IT estate using a single as-a-service platform across public and private clouds as well as datacenter workloads.

The benefits of HPE and VMware collaboration

For eighteen years, HPE and VMware have worked together to deliver game-changing results to our shared 500,000+ customers. Today, we are collaborating to revolutionize virtualization economics and create new efficiencies for our clients with the industryโ€™s most complete portfolio of tightly integrated and jointly engineered systemsโ€”from any desktop or device to the data center, cloud, and beyond.

Together, weโ€™re bringing the promise of the software-defined data center to life. The combination of HPEโ€™s hyperconverged and composable infrastructure with VMwareโ€™s compute, storage, and networking virtualization solutions dramatically improve both the value and business outcomes our customers experience.
