Hear Kirk Bresniker on Mission-Critical Innovations in HP Integrity servers


I often find myself explaining the industry that I work in to family, friends, and acquaintances. Almost every time I finish I’m asked the same question, “What exactly is mission critical?” It’s an understandable question, especially given that few individuals outside an IT environment possess knowledge of mission-critical computing and how it ultimately affects them. I assumed if I were to ask the same question to experienced IT professionals, I’d receive a single correct and detailed response. I was wrong. What one customer determines to be mission critical is usually fundamentally different than any other. The types of answers to the question, “What is mission critical?” are directly dependent on the workloads they run, and the value behind mission critical is clear, concise, and unified. For the processes that your business simply can’t do without, mission-critical systems are essential. 


To expand on the value behind mission-critical systems for your essential processes, I’d like to reflect on the newly released HP Integrity systems featuring the Intel Itanium 9500 series processors on HP-UX. I recently had the opportunity to hear a podcast featuring, HP Chief Technologist and HP Fellow, Kirk Bresniker. In it he provided an insightful breakdown of product details for the November 8th announcement and its corresponding value to the customer. Key areas Kirk discusses include:


  • 3x performance of new Integrity systems
  • Always-on enhancements
  • Protecting mission-critical workloads


The value of these core topics circles back to how customers define mission-critical computing. There is no standard definition, rather it is simply the processes you simply can't do without and the undeniable fact is those processes are continuing to increase in criticality, quantity and scope. This statement can be broken down into two fundamental requirements to provide customer value, the requirement to increase the capacity and efficiency of mission-critical environments, and the requirement to expand upon mission-critical capabilities.


Improvements in processor performance, memory performance, and internal communication links contribute to up to 3x boost in performance over the prior generation of Integrity systems. It’s easy to see how this boost in performance will increase the capacity, efficiency, and as a result TCO for the customer. A simple blade swap will result in tremendous increases in the value of any customers existing infrastructure.


Features such as incorporating the ability to hot swap out an I/O card in case of failure on Integrity blades, enabling electrically isolated partitioning capabilities on Integrity blades, common iLO technology, and innovation across every category of HP-UX provides the always-on availability that customers require.


The capability to not only instantaneously recover from fault but quickly resume normal operation is ensured by a suite of high availability middleware, HP Serviceguard Solutions. This is achieved through deep partnerships with many of the most crucial independent software vendors, ISVs. These products not only minimize downtime, but ultimately provide the security that your mission-critical workload is protected.


Taking a step back, this announcement demonstrates HP’s dedication to continued innovation in established mission critical infrastructure. The products featured in this announcement enable customers to meet their changing l needs and incorporate more of their processes into their mission-critical environment. HP provides the opportunity for customers to examine their mission critical environment and chart their own path into the future. If they want to maintain processes on HP-UX, then a continually improving experience awaits them. If they want to explore mission critical on Linux and Windows, then HP invites them to explore their future with Mission Critical Converged Infrastructure and Project Odyssey. The value is clear and the paths are flexible.
