Pella Increases Infrastructure Performance and Scalability—and Saves on Oracle Costs

See how window manufacturer Pella significantly reduced Oracle costs by modernizing its ERP environment with mission-critical HPE Integrity Superdome X and HPE 3PAR StoreServ flash storage.

Blog_PELLA_MCS.jpgFounded in 1925, Pella Corporation manufactures premium-quality windows and doors at 10 locations across the United States. This industry innovator produces both standardized and made-to-order products according to lean manufacturing principles. Following a continuous improvement process model, Pella delivers high-quality products to customers while squeezing out waste as efficiently as possible. I’d like to share Pella’s IT innovation story with you.

Thousands of customer orders flow into Pella’s Oracle-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) system each day from the firm’s network of showrooms as well as from leading retailers. Because its products are highly configurable, Pella custom manufactures a high percentage of its windows and doors and operates a very large Oracle database to track the massive volume of configurable products it manages.

The challenges for Pella: Move to open systems to reduce operating expenses, lower Oracle licensing costs and deliver incremental capacity—all with a reliable, scalable and high-performing infrastructure to support a critical ERP environment.

Our solution: We worked with them to migrate to Superdome X running Linux to support Pella’s Oracle Business Suite and Oracle Database 10g environment and achieve the performance, scalability and cost objectives. In fact, the new HPE hardware actually paid for itself.

Today, the Superdome X servers coupled with HPE 3PAR StoreServ flash storage are helping Pella not only reduce Oracle deployment costs but also improve manufacturing and distribution efficiencies. Both business and IT goals were met.

“We embrace the scalability, flexibility, and long-term economics of Superdome X. It allows us to reduce our operational costs and avoid incremental Oracle licensing costs. In addition, we have the flexibility to scale up and scale out to support increased performance requirements for our mission-critical ERP applications over time.”
