Powering through data center power consumption requirements

Applications power profiles changing and maximizing server density—without stranding power while taking loads into consideration. These challenges were all flowing through my head as I got off the phone with one of our Solution Architects. 

He was providing guidance to one of his partners struggling with a proposal and trying to accurately estimate the power consumption of a server. He knew the server power was important as it will define the power distribution requirements at the rack level. As many IT decision makers know, this is the starting point for estimating the total power consumption and cooling needs for their data centers.

It’s also one of the many important factors to take in consideration when designing and expanding data centers, or even planning rack deployments.

In this case, the solution architect’s partner had a customer request that he had been working on for over a month as part of a data center upgrade. Now, the facility manager of this data center was making even more changes to the data center configuration—before the first analysis was even completed.

Our seasoned Solution Architect knew several ways to approach this power allocation for power distribution, power redundancy and battery backup requirements for the data center.

One approach—and probably the most tedious one—was to look up the part numbers for each of the quoted servers and storage devices. This involved going to technical specifications, figuring out the power requirements and doing the manual calculations for each device. This method would be very time consuming and had a high margin of error.  The other way—and likely the quickest and the most reliable way—for getting power data information was to use a software application that generated a power report that he needed for his data center. This tool has the functionality to easily change the power inputs as configurations changed.

The Solution Architect used what he has used practically every time when in the same situation: He sent an HPE Power Advisor link to his partner.

Next: The partner opened the online tool and started his journey with the HPE Power Advisor. He made changes to the SSDs and memory modules per the most recent change to the configuration from his customer. He completed the configuration, generated a power report. After that, he built out the system into the quoting tool and confidently sent a proposal over to his customer with the power estimate report with the new changes.
