Things you need to know if you’re running a small to midsized business—and you don’t have a server

When you’re running a business, you have a lot to think about. Most businesses start up with nothing more than a PC, and just keep loading files onto it as they grow. And with everything you need to do daily just to keep the lights on, the common “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” approach is fine for everything, from the coffee maker to the PCs that hold everything your business runs on.

But there are two things you should take a moment to consider.

1. You are a prime candidate for data loss or theft

First, as large enterprises become more savvy about protecting their IT environments and data, cybercriminals are turning their attention to the small and midsized businesses that make easier targets. According to a recent government study, 60% of small businesses experienced a cyber breach in a single year, with the average damage per incident being between $100,000 and $175,000* Not many businesses can survive a loss that big. And even if your data is not the target of cybercrime, how would it impact your business if one of your employees’ devices was lost, stolen, or simply crashed?

2. Employee productivity is a critical element of success

Secondly, your employees need anywhere, anytime, any device mobile access to apps, information, and collaboration tools so they can be more productive and help grow your business. If you’re not offering this type of accessibility, chances are good that employees are working around it by using unsecured public cloud apps to share and store data that’s critical to the success of the business; see number one, above.
