RHEL 4.4 and RHEL 4.8 in same cluster

Hi,

Is it possible to configure HP Service guard Cluster with RHEL4 update4 and RHEL4 update8?

We wanted to have both these different version in a single cluster?

Re: RHEL 4.4 and RHEL 4.8 in same cluster

Both are RHEL 4's, so I think it would be possible - technically.

However, unless you have a specific requirement to keep one of the hosts at RHEL 4.4 level, it would be silly to do so. HP strongly recommends the cluster members' OS version and patch levels should be as identical as possible.

If your systems are registered to RedHat Network and have valid RedHat support entitlements, updating the RHEL 4.4 system to 4.8 level should be as simple as running "up2date -u", and then rebooting to start using the updated kernel.

If you have a RHEL 4.8 installation DVD, you can mount it, backup your current /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources, then edit it to comment out the line "up2date default" and add a line pointing to your mounted DVD, e.g.

dir mydvdrepo /media/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS

After this, you should be able to use up2date with the local DVD.

Re: RHEL 4.4 and RHEL 4.8 in same cluster

Hi MK,

Thanks for your reply.

Actual issue was, We had a SG cluster with two RHEL4.4 Servers.
As per the new fabric switch Firmware upgrade HP has recommended to upgrade both of these servers OS to minimum RHEL 4.7 and we planned to do it to RHEL 4.8.

The package in the cluster was running in a active/passive mode.

So i have upgraded the passive node after removing it from the cluster.

But after upgrade OS boot failed with kernel panic.
mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switching to new root
switchroot: mount failed: 22
mount /initrd/dev failed: 2
Kernel panin - not syncing: attempted to kill init!

So i have removed the disks and a RHEL 4.8 os disk from an other server with same model is connected to the server.

Yes. It is possible to do a serviceguard cluster between RHEL4.4 and RHEL4.8.
