Four cloud services portability points to ease delivering IaaS



Workload portability should be one of the foundation strategies of any hybrid cloud IT initiative. While embracing open standards and open source are important, the real goal is to be able to move workloads effortlessly and seamlessly between your public and private cloud resources to achieve the full agility and other benefits hybrid cloud IT offers. The characteristics and elements IT should be looking to build into their private IaaS cloud workload handling capabilities is the ability to easily and quickly deliver infrastructure services throughout the entire application lifecycle. Whether in development, test or production, workloads should be able to effortlessly move across multi-private cloud environments and public clouds as needed. Using elements such as Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) compliant service design for service portability in hybrid environments can help you achieving that goal.


There are four important points to achieving workload portability in your hybrid cloud:


  • Add existing application provisioning on top of your infrastructure service designs: Tools like HPE’s new Topology designer in HPE Cloud Service Automation 4.5®, within HPE Helion CloudSystem Enterprise®, allow you to add applications provisioning portability on top of the infrastructure design. It can also be done through open source tools like Chef, Puppet and Server Automation. If you use Docker in your environment, you can even specify the Docker file to host on a Docker server, on the designer.


  • Support multi-provider service designs: Portable service designs with mixed providers targeted in a single topology design avoids design sprawl by allowing deployment on different resource pools in HPE Helion CloudSystem 9.0. A new HPE Helion OpenStack® provider can also be mixed with other OpenStack® providers in a single topology design.


  • Implement an abstract, portable, service design: By using late resource binding and dynamic options at the time of deployment, designs can be free from any provider instance and can be bound to a provider at subscription time. Through HPE CloudSystem Enterprise 9.0, attributes and dynamic options can be selected at subscription time, based on the chosen provider.


  • Enable portability across resource pools: HPE CSA 4.5 allows for portability across multiple resource pools. One design can include VMs from different resource pools in your private cloud and in public clouds.  Another design could even include pools of virtual machines and/or even physical servers, managed through HPE OneView. HPE CSA 4.5 also includes an Amazon AWS provider to support HPE Helion Eucalyptus private clouds.

So what does a hybrid cloud strategy that has workload portability, based on TOSCA compliant designs, baked in provide to the business? You design your infrastructure cloud service once and can deliver consistent service without errors on different cloud environments as workloads progress through dev/test, QA and then production.
