Industry Interview Series: Bobby Patrick, CMO of HPE Cloud

This is the first in a series of videos and blogs speaking with both HPE and external subject matter experts on various aspects of hybrid cloud security. Today we start the series by speaking with Bobby Patrick, CMO at HPE Cloud, about how security can be used to create a business advantage in a cloud transformation. Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Bobby Patrick, Chief Marketing Officer at HPE Cloud, to hear what he had to say about cloud and security, and how customers can use security to create a strategic advantage in a cloud transformation. I’ve summarized what he had to say below, but to hear the discussion in full, please watch the accompanying video.

In a recent study from 451 Research, security, compliance and data sovereignty were cited as the top challenges when moving to the cloud. I asked Bobby whether these concerns were well founded, and he told me that cyber security and cloud go hand in hand – cloud is the catalyst for customer transformation, and security is their big concern.

He explained that the massive amounts of data that are being created each day are being used to store meta data about people and their online activity, and this information is just as sensitive in some cases as credit card data – think for example about location data coming from an internet connected car, or personal health information coming from a smart watch.

So it’s important to think about all of this when moving into the cloud, taking into consideration regulatory compliance, both from the industry perspective as well as country specific regulations around data sovereignty, and what the impact of a breach would be on an organization.

Bobby went on to explain that the customers he speaks with are very nervous about putting information into the cloud, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn't do it – he firmly believes that public cloud needs to be a part of every organization’s cloud transformation strategy, or ‘right mix’.

He offered a number of pieces of advice – embrace the cloud, and embrace the risk. Do this as part of an end to end plan, and make sure security is put first. Classify the data you put into the cloud, and understand how data flows through, and is secured in the cloud.

We ended the conversation discussing the strategic role that HPE plays in cloud security – how we work to help support and evolve the standards that shape the cloud, we provide unique technologies such as HPE Fortify, HPE Arcsight, and our data security products to protect every cloud deployment, and we work with the right partners to help shape an ecosystem bringing together partners and service providers through initiatives such as Cloud 28+.
