Want to take control of your hybrid cloud? Learn how one organization did just that.

Take control of your hybird cloud.jpgYour organization wants to leverage public cloud resources, but you may be a little leery due to horror stories about unwieldy costs and risks. While a hybrid cloud strategy (a mix of private cloud, public cloud, and on-premises infrastructure) brings a host of advantages, it’s difficult and time consuming to keep on top of who’s spending what. Over time, it also becomes harder to maintain control of who is deploying cloud computing resources and where they are being used.

These challenges leave you stuck between a rock and a hard place—you want the benefits of cloud but not the headaches. Yet without a common management interface across environments, it’s difficult to achieve visibility and control across the entire hybrid estate.

Getting a consistent cloud management view that works across your public and private clouds isn’t a trivial activity. And Magellan Robotech, a UK-based betting company can relate. Founded in 2014, Magellan Robotech aimed to explore new frontiers in gaming and entertainment. To bring new gaming services and applications to market increasingly faster and gain a competitive edge, the company needed to provision infrastructure resources quickly.

Previously, Magellan Robotech’s test and development systems were housed in a legacy data center environment, and they faced constant bottlenecks due to challenges with scalability and agility. They needed to quickly move away from legacy waterfall methodologies into a new DevOps environment.

“We still had services taking five days or more to be delivered to our developers in-house, and it was still looking like a six-month lead time to roll out services to customers. To gain an edge in our market, we really needed to cut this time down,” stated Graham Banner, Head of IT Operations, Magellan Robotech.

While at an HPE customer tradeshow, HPE OneSphere caught the attention of the Magellan Robotech team. HPE OneSphere, a hybrid-cloud management platform, is a software-as-a-service (SaaS) portal that provides a unified experience across public clouds, on-premises private clouds and software-defined infrastructure.

For Magellan Robotech, HPE OneSphere provided a single solution to handle all of their needs. “The fact that HPE OneSphere provides a platform that’s accessed by all lines of business—our legal teams, compliance teams, end users—was a ‘wow’ moment for us,” confirmed Banner. “This one piece of technology provided everything we needed.”

HPE OneSphere provided Magellan Robotech significant benefits that directly impacted their productivity and business, including:

-- Decreased machine provisioning time from 5 working days to 30 seconds

-- Delivered 20% reduction in the workload for admin team

-- Accelerated time to provision infrastructure by enabling developers to self-service their hybrid cloud computing needs

-- Provided immediate insights and reporting on resource consumption and costs

Before deploying HPE OneSphere, Magellan Robotech was not using any public cloud resources as they didn’t feel they had the right expertise to harness it effectively. “It used to take up to five days for a developer or a DevOps engineer to request access to resources and get them approved,” said Banner. “With HPE OneSphere, what previously took days now only takes a few minutes—and in some cases, less than a minute.”

Using HPE OneSphere, Magellan Robotech continually implements new projects, and they can provision and deploy applications in minutes, both on and off premise.  Magellan Robotech successfully leveraged this new hybrid cloud management platform to achieve the promised benefits of public cloud.
