Why other vendors don’t make the Composable Infrastructure grade

In an interview with Jake Ludington at Discover London, Paul Miller, VP Marketing, HPE Converged Data Center Infrastructure, discussed HPE Synergy and the other vendors who are claiming to offer composability when really, they fall very short.

According to Miller, since the announcement of HPE Synergy, the industry’s first infrastructure built from the ground up for composability, “a lot of our competitors are suddenly raising their hands and saying ‘I’m composable, too.’ When really, no one else offers full, true composability.” Miller explains the important difference: that in order to be fully composable there are some key requirements that all have to be met.

The first is the ability to compose all elements of the infrastructure – computer, storage and fabric. “Last time I checked, applications need all of these. So if you can’t compose all of them as one fluid pool of resources, you aren’t composable,” says Miller.

Second, he explains, is the ability to cover all workloads - physical, virtual and containerized. If the only workload that you cover is virtual, “then you are just virtualization, you’re not composable.” Miller explains that being truly composable means the ability to compose physical assets; Being able to disaggregate the physical compute, the physical storage and the physical fabric to stand up a workload that wants to run on bare metal, or like a lot of today’s applications, are built for the cloud.

Additionally, to be called composable you must have the ability to compose all of your applications, whether they are software-defined or any other kind. “If you can only do software-defined, you are still just hyper converged, not composable,” says Miller.

And finally, the ability to deliver at cloud-like speed - to be able to stand up a workload and an infrastructure in minutes, not days. “If you can’t do all of these, you are not composable. You are not delivering the real value of composability,” says Miller.

Miller goes on to explain that HPE was the first in the industry to set the framework around what converged systems were all about, and while these converged and hyper converged systems solved business needs and simplified the datacenter, “they are still static.”

“A lot of competitors are saying all converged systems are composable. We aren’t claiming any of our Converged Systems are composable and we don’t want our competitors to do that and confuse customers either.”

And while there are many key elements that set HPE Synergy apart– like being able to boot up ready to run your infrastructure – the main thing Miller wants customers to understand is that composability is all about the value it brings to the business.

“Customers need to make sure they are getting true composable infrastructure so they can experience the true value of reduced costs and time to market.”
