A reference architecture is like being given a recipe for an amazing meal. You still have to buy the ingredients and put them together, but you’re given detailed instructions by a food expert who specializes in making that specific dish. The recipe gives you tips to make sure you are putting everything together in the best possible way to ensure ideal results for your particular palette.

HPE Reference Architectures (RAs) essentially do the same thing. They capture best practices and provide detailed configuration, sizing, bill of material, and deployment details that enable a successful business outcome.

As HPE Synergy ramps and starts shipping, HPE engineers and solution experts have been busy developing HPE Reference Architectures (RAs) for HPE Synergy to help customers with their mission critical workloads for their composable infrastructure.

HPE Synergy is the first platform built from the ground up for composable infrastructure and accelerates digital transformation of traditional application to cloud native applications. HPE Synergy uses a single interface called HPE Synergy Composer that composes physical and virtual compute, storage, and fabric pools into any configuration for any application. As an extensible platform, it easily enables a broad range of applications and operational models such as virtualization, hybrid cloud, and DevOps.

HPE Reference Configuration for Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 on HPE Synergy

Deploying Microsoft Exchange Server in an enterprise is typically a complex and time-consuming process involving multiple teams–each providing a part of an overall configuration recipe. With the introduction of HPE Synergy, this process is simplified and accelerated. Using the HPE bigstock-Cooking-recipe-from-tablet-100408799.jpgSynergy Composer, pools of resources consisting of compute, storage and fabric can be deployed, managed and reconfigured using templates that describe the resources required for each server in an application. Because solutions like Exchange use the same configuration for every server, templates simplify and speed deployment, while significantly reducing administrative errors.

This reference configuration details the deployment of an Exchange 2013 environment that supports 42,000 – 6 GB mailboxes based on a profile of 150 messages sent and received per day for each user. The composable infrastructure components are assembled into building blocks based on an HPE Synergy 12000 Frame. (This is the foundation for a scalable infrastructure that contains pools of compute, storage, fabric, cooling and power resources with an embedded management solution and can be extended to fill a rack of four frames.) The rack with the four frames is duplicated in the second site, and the solution allows for a highly available and disaster resilient design. It is easily deployed with the templates on the integrated set of Synergy components with all compute, storage and network hardware contained within the Synergy 12000 Frames.
