11,000 delegates and counting: Discovering the numbers behind HP’s biggest event

HP Discover (June 11-13 Las Vegas) has recently come to an end. To give you a different insight into one of the world’s biggest business and technology showcases, I looked at the event through numbers – stats that give you insight into the sheer scale of the show.


Coffee and insights

There’s always a really positive vibe at HP Discover: Attracting the world’s leading media and analysts and thousands of HP’s customers and partners, the atmosphere is buzzing, hard working and energetic. I also love attending for two other reasons. First, I get to meet over coffee with customers and these informal chats are always where I get the best nuggets about people’s education priorities. And second, I catch up with colleagues from across HP to learn about which training issues are important across the world.


Someone told me that there are 200,000 slot machines in Las Vegas. Once I got over my surprise, I began thinking – could I look at HP Discover by the numbers? So here’s my alternative look at our biggest showcase:


The 11,000-strong audience: Over the three days 11,000 people attended the show.  

15,000 steps and smiling: A customer’s pedometer congratulated her on the 15,000 steps she took on day one. That’s around 7 to 8 miles. It sounds like a long way. But as she said, there’s so much going on, you can cram a huge amount into a small time window. She was still smiling too showing that fitness and work can be a winning combination.

The number 1 education issue: We all know that business needs to move quickly. A trend highlighted by colleague Marc Sodano, Director, Americas Education Delivery. Marc said to me: “The sense I get from customers at Discover is that time is in ever shorter supply. People’s number one priority is training teams quickly to ensure that enablement is complete in time for a successful (and fast!) project rollout.”

5 theater sessions: I delivered five presentations on education in the demo theater in the Software Services Zone. People asked a lot of great questions about how to increase user adoption of their software solutions. Clearly, easily producing training and performance support for a large number of employees in multiple languages is a big issue for customers and we subsequently walked over 100 attendees through detailed demonstrations our ART solution.


 A 650,000-strong community: I co-presented with Patrick Eitenbichler from our ExpertOne organization about how certification accelerates business performance and innovation. Patrick mentioned that the HP ExpertOne Community, a forum to share ideas and educate IT professionals, has a remarkable 650,000 members; that’s more people who understand the benefits of investing in their education than people who live in Las Vegas (population 500,000).

Over 5,000 tweets:  There were over 13,000 tweets about the show over the three days while the @HPDiscover twitter feed has in excess of 43,000 followers. The key trending items throughout the event related to the converged cloud infrastructure, getting the most out of your Big Data and innovations in enterprise storage. Also, the mobile app with the agenda, maps and more was downloaded 4,359 times and QR codes were scanned 2,409 times.

Net traffic up 25%: During the show traffic to rises by around a quarter. I caught up with one of our web guys at Discover and he told me that the site has 300,000 individual pages powered by our highly energy efficient server technology. I was amazed to learn that at any one time the servers only consume the same amount of power as 12 household light bulbs


The number unknown

As I was flying home I paused to reflect on another great show. It struck me again that I get most inspiration from the little chats here and there with customers and colleagues. That got me musing that that there must be countless great ideas generated by discussions at HP Discover. I can’t put a number to them sadly. But all those feedback groups, chats, roundtables and dinner conversations will trickle through into new solutions. Just going to show and taking the time from busy schedules to put our collective heads together can result in great things.
