The Strata Conference February 11-13 in Santa Clara, California is shaping up to be an incredible event to get a read on the latest innovations in big data.

How Twitter uses HAVEn

From HP, I will be among the presenters appearing alongside Twitter Senior Database Reliability Engineer Josh Varner to discuss how Twitter is using HAVEn to run their Big Data analytics. It’s an incredible story: Every day the social network will ingest about 100 TBs of data and tens of thousands of Hadoop jobs. It has used HAVEn to integrate HP Vertica with their Hadoop infrastructure to deliver the scale and speed needed to analyze 400 million tweets a day for recommendations and revenue growth opportunities. Come listen to Josh — I don’t want to steal his thunder by telling you more here.

You may recall this is not the first major social network to present with HP on Big Data: In December, Facebook CIO Tim Campos appeared at HP Discover in Barcelona to talk how it uses Vertica.

One of the main challenges in big data analytics has been to analyze silos of data together to provide a 360-degree view of customers, operations, security, or any analytical task that combines business, machine, and human data. HAVEn 2.0 is HP’s powerful big data platform, integrating analytics technologies from Vertica, IDOL and ArcSight along with Hadoop to provide an engine that shines light on 100 percent of dark data.

New style of analytics

Twitter is indicative of some leading-edge approaches to analytics. In particular, I think the idea of discovery is starting to catch hold: you really don’t know what you’ll find with big data, and you don’t need to presuppose what the question will be. This is why organizations like to store data before analyzing it, which is where Hadoop comes in. Hadoop is becoming an enterprise data hub, the next generation of the enterprise data warehouse.

Twitter is certainly a compelling example of a company that uses a lot of open-source technology, including Hadoop, but has now found value in adopting enterprise platforms to get near real-time results at scale with HP HAVEn 2.0.

I expect there to be a lot of buzz about how Hadoop has progressed to be the enterprise data hub for 100 percent of data, and the transition from the traditional enterprise data warehouse (EDW) for just business data. Hadoop 2.2 has made great strides in making it easier to use and more stable, plus with new components like YARN, it has advanced from being a simple tool to more of an operating system for big data.

There will also be much discussion about how the analytics layer is maturing with major technology vendors working to make it more viable for Fortune 500 companies to start using it. You can bet on seeing many demonstrations and of Big Data in action. HP will demo HP HAVEn 2.0 at the HP booth.

Come see HAVEn in action in the Exhibit Hall

HP HAVEn has a booth in the Exhibit Hall If you’ll be at Strata, be sure to stop by! We’ll be showing:

  • How Vertica 7 works with structured and semi-structured data— come learn about FlexZones
  • How the Autonomy IDOL engine handles unstructured data analysis of text, documents, images and meaning-based search, etc.
  • How HAVEn integrates it all with Hadoop and ArcSight 6.5c enterprise security to create a comprehensive big data platform that offers a 100 percent view all your data—machine, human and transactional.

HAVEn 2.0’s focus is to deliver big data value, alongside providing best-in-class technology for handling the volume, variety, velocity, and veracity of data at scale. HP has built an industry-leading open platform to ignite further innovation in use of big data for timely and actionable insights at scale. We’re creating a marketplace for innovation and would love for you to be a part of it.

What can HP HAVEn 2.0 do for you? We look forward to connecting with you at Strata 2014.
