Graduating into the world of work

How do we get new graduates ready for the world of work? It’s a question that interests all of us. Our team in Malaysia might just have an answer. It’s supporting a training initiative to give IT students practical skills that has seen 87% of people who’ve attended the course go on to be employed by specialist IT testing firms or IT departments. Rajesh Prabhakaran, our Vice President, Asia Pacific & Japan, Professional Services, explains more below.

A magic formula

We’ve all heard it: “Graduates aren’t ready for work.” I’m at odds with this claim; the students we see are bright, articulate and professional. But if a weakness exists, it’s that grads can lack practical experience. To this end, the Malaysian government, keen to develop its hi-tech sector, has worked with us at HP and universities to create a training scheme that equips students with skills that employers want.

The scheme focuses around software testing: a market the government rightly sees as having huge potential as apps proliferate and mobile and Cloud trends gather pace. We were delighted to help when the Education and Finance Ministries asked us to create a training program around our Quality Center, QuickTest Professional, LoadRunner, and Performance Center solutions. Funded by the government, the six-week course was first offered to students at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Malaysia’s leading technical university. Five more universities are now involved. And the teamwork between government, educators, and business is proving to be something of a magic formula.

Feeding a hi-tech cluster

As well as providing practical experience in testing, the initiative helps students find jobs. The graduates also expand the pool of skilled talent to help deliver a key objective of the government: the creation of a hi-tech hub in Malaysia with the skills to target lucrative global demand for software testing.

Learning with hands on

The course includes classroom-based tuition but the emphasis is on hands-on labs. In the lab environment students create, run and analyze test results. They also understand how to store, reuse and amend tests based on results. The exercises use “real-world” testing scenarios. After the six-week course, students are very competent in using our software. And with the software having around 70% market share, our students are ready to get testing on day one of their first job using the industry’s de facto testing tools.

Great results

  • Attractive graduates: Our graduates are in strong demand – close to 90% work in testing
  • 800 graduates: The course is taken after graduation and prior to starting work; so far 800 people have completed it
  • 1000 and counting: The training is being rolled out to many more universities – up to 1000 people are expected to take the course next year

We’re pleased with the progress: The scheme’s not only benefiting the individual student but it’s helping to prepare the next generation for Malaysia’s flourishing IT sector. We’re also supporting the government and the universities in setting up a Center of Excellence. As well as overseeing training, the Center will work with alumni to support them in building testing-based businesses. In turn, alumni will mentor the new generation of testing professionals coming through.

What do you think of the scheme? Have you any ideas for how we can get students ready for IT work?
