HP partners with Cloudera to unleash the power of Hadoop

Sabie_HPSW ‎08-10-2012 02:18 AM - edited ‎07-23-2015 03:52 PM

HP has agreed to sell the Cloudera Enterprise platform along with its hardware and an HP Hadoop appliance. This is set for release in the fourth quarter. The key differentiators that make HP a much desired partner are its HP Converged Infrastructure (enterprise architecture), the HP Insight Cluster Manager Utility, and integrations with Vertica (analytics database) platform and Autonomy (search) software.

Other key points

  • The partnership simplifies purchasing as HP will furnish everything the customer needs, including Cloudera's software and its own Proliant x86 servers and HP storage and networking hardware. The repeatability stems from an Apache Hadoop for Cloudera reference architecture that HP announced in June.
  • The HP Hadoop appliance to be released in the fourth quarter will see Cloudera's software preinstalled on the HP AppSystem for Apache Hadoop, which includes HP Insight Cluster Manager Utility software.
  • The partnership puts yet more feet on the street offering Cloudera Enterprise, the vendor's Apache Hadoop software distribution combined with enterprise support and Cloudera Enterprise 4.0, its deployment, monitoring, and systems management software for Hadoop. Cloudera has already partnered with a list of IT vendors, including IBM, Informatica, MicroStrategy, Teradata, and more.
  • The advanced analytics that HP has with Vertica for extreme structured, semi-structured, and even some unstructured data and the human-information analysis that HP can do with Autonomy (has the ability to work with high-scale voice, video, and text) can be leveraged for Hadoop which is a great place for storing data. HP also has big-data-related partnerships with Microsoft, SAP, and VMware and will remain open to others.
  • Vertica is a leading real-time, scalable, analytical platform with support for standard SQL/ODBC/JDBC. The Vertica connectors for Hadoop allow seamless integration of both structured and unstructured data providing end-to-end analytic support even for data residing in HDFS  in addition to simplified bi-directional data movement. This reduces customer integration costs and enables leveraging existing BI investments in SQL/JDBC/ODBC technologies.
  • HP's Insight Cluster Management Utility software is completely complementary to Cloudera's systems management and monitoring software. Cloudera Manager manages the performance and the workloads within the total Hadoop environment whereas HP's tool is more focused on hardware deployment and management.
