How will Cloud be different in 2020 than today?

I recently had the pleasure of spending the day with the East London Councils as they discussed the roadmap for their 2020 vision.

The event was hosted by Cap Gemini in the ASE Centre near Farringdon.

The ASE (Accelerated Solutions Environment) it is worth mentioning because it was designed “To bring key business stakeholders together to work on their business strategy, technology architecture and key business improvement initiatives.’ Judging by today’s output, it is working.

I hosted a breakout session discussing how Cloud can accelerate the Application Rationalisation and Datacentre Consolidation the councils are aiming for.

We centred on a number of key topics:

  • · Identifying App suitable for Cloud
  • · Looking at core vs. context applications to assess whether Public or Private Cloud is suitable
  • · Using Cloud to accelerate application transformation during the development phase
  • · Future state of a Hybrid World
  • · Moving to a tiered Cloud solution
  • · The concept of a Community Cloud, think private Cloud just for London Councils.

As this is a roadmap for 2020, we tried to think without boundaries. Thinking without boundaries is key when talking about Cloud. It is one of my firm beliefs that today we are using Cloud to replicate tasks/services that we currently run. Yes, they are faster, more agile and in most cases fiscally astute, but they are hardly revolutionary and the end user is often oblivious to the change. We are however on the cusp of something game changing: using the possibilities of Cloud-enabled services to deliver the seemingly impossible—delivering the Wow factor.

If you are lucky enough to live in an East London Council Borough these will be coming to you sooner than you may think. For those who aren’t, keep your eyes on the horizon.
