This Week in Cloud — the benefits of standards, episode 4

When preparing for the cloud, it’s important to make decisions that proactively minimize any complexity that it could introduce.

For example, one of the big challenges is ensuring consistency across cloud environments—public, private or managed. This was a focus of the latest This Week in Cloud video, featuring Paul Muller, HP’s Chief Software Evangelist, and Christian Verstraete, our Chief Technologist for Cloud Solutions.

As they discuss in the video posted below, a lack of standardization poses challenges for moving workloads from one environment to another, as with bursting. Standing up a cloud instance is a complex undertaking because an entire stack must be certified for every different machine image. And if you’re working with a huge database, it’s important to keep that link between the workload and its associated data to ensure security and consistency.

Of course, the people who do the work and put the services on the different targets need to manage and learn different environments, so there is an inherent complexity in that, too.

These are all arguments in favor of standardization, but organizations need to decide what standard to go with and weigh the risks associated with cloud vendor lock-in.

So what I’m curious to hear from you about is this: how have you tried to address issues of consistency and standardization across cloud stacks and the data layer, and what evaluations of the OpenStack platform have you conducted?

Post your comments or any questions you have in the forum thread How are you standardizing data and infrastructure for the cloud?
