Expansion of a MSA30 S-B ENCLOSURE (4TB array)

I currently have a MSA30 S-B ENCLOSURE with a 4TB array attached to a HP Smart Array 6400 Controller in a DL380 G4. I would like to use a HP StorageWorks 70 MSA Enclosure with a P800 controller, (18)300GB 2.5 SAS drives, to expand the 4TBs.

What do I need to make it work?

Re: Expansion of a MSA30 S-B ENCLOSURE (4TB array)

hi Jon,

You can connect both MSA 30 and MSA 70 to same server. But you will need to create sperate arrays for two enclosures. Expansion of existing space can be achived only through OS. You cannot interconnect MSA 30 to MSA 70 since MSA 30 is using SCSI and MSA 70 is SAS.

Rajs,

So all I would need is a Mini SAS to VHDCI Cable to plug it into the other port on the SA6400?

No. You will need to install P800 controlller into your server and connect MSA 70 enclosure to it. Your MSA 30 will remain as it is. (If you need to expand existing LUN Space that can achive through OS)

The server was purchased in 12/06. The P800 utilizes PCI Express technology. Will this be an issue? How can I tell if the server has a PCI Express slot?

Standard configuration of DL 380 G4 comes with PCI-X slots. (unless you have purchase optional PCI express riser cage)

See quick specs,

You may have to go for a P600 controller instead of P800.
