Re: P2000 MSA G3 SAS & Proliant Gen9 Server

Is there an update regarding the issue? This is a dealbraker, literally!

Re: P2000 MSA G3 SAS & Proliant Gen9 Server

Hi all,

We have the same issue, we recently upgraded our servers from DL360 G7 to DL360 Gen9 servers connected to HP P2000 MSA G3 storage device via SAS.

Previous setup: (stable for 3 years)

3x           HP ProLiant DL360 G7

1x           HP MSA P2000 G3

3x           HP Modular Smart Array SC08e 2-ports Ext PCIe x8 SAS Host Bus Adapter (to connect the ProLiant to the P2000)

                p/n:       614988-B21

New setup (2 months running – unstable)

3x           HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9

1x           HP MSA P2000 G3

3x           HP H241 12Gb 2-ports Ext Smart Host Bus Adapter (to connect the ProLiant to the P2000)

                p/n:       726911-B21

3x           HP SD-card 8GB (to run VMware ESX on)

When investigating the upgrade, HP confirmed to my HP supplier that the combo DL360 Gen9 + P2000 G3 + H241 was OK.

Dear Danny,

Thank you for using our service.

Question

You guys know which SAS HBA I should use in a DL380gen9 server to connect to a P2000?

Answer

Gen9 servers can connect to MSA 2040 SAS / P2000G3 MSA SAS using the H241 adapter (726911-B21). Supported OS details can be found on SPOCK:

Older generation MSA SAS arrays are not supported with Gen9 servers.

Yours Sincerely,

About 2 months ago, we installed the complete kit but since we see an unstable situation, odd thing it only started about 1,5 months after the installation.

Since, we once again updated all systems including firmware and VMware updates.

HP Support just mentioned the following,

Compatible P2000 HBA's: H221 & SC08e

Compatible Gen9 HBA's: H240ar & H241

Either way, we need to replace the P2000 or need to downgrade to G8 servers..

Will get in contact with HP tomorrow in a conference together with my supplier to discuss next steps.

Case: 4752888713

P.S. This setup runs over in Kenya, we are based in Holland.. Makes it even more challenging.

Re: P2000 MSA G3 SAS & Proliant Gen9 Server

Hi all

New firmware was released for the H241 controllers (version 2.52) along with a new set of drivers for VMware ESXI 5.5. We tested the new firmware & drivers on one server and the result is still the same, so it doesn't fix any of our issues (down paths not reviving and new LUNs not visible).

Re: P2000 MSA G3 SAS & Proliant Gen9 Server

Erik_IG , did you manage to get this working?

I checked HP SPOCK, VMware ESXi is not in the list of supported configurations (P2000 + H241). It's only for Windows, SuSE and RedHat.

We're planning to buy the DL360G9+H241 for our P2000 SAS and ESXi. Should we go ahead?

Thanks

Re: P2000 MSA G3 SAS & Proliant Gen9 Server

We have not got this working correctly. I would strongly advise against buying this kit while these problems persist. Optionally you might want to use H221 controllers instead of H241 controllers, which work for us on Gen8 servers. Most likely these'll work just fine in G9 servers, but it's not "HP supported".

Re: P2000 MSA G3 SAS & Proliant Gen9 Server

Same Shame with DL380 G9 & "smart" HBA H241 doesnt discover other than LUN0 from IBM v3700 on ESXi 6.0.

We opened a ticket to HP and the reply was "Interaporability with third party SAN" because the SAN was IBM. Hmm ok,

we managed to update all available firmwares and nothing changed.. LUN0 was the only lun was accessible on the host in HBA Mode from SPA & SPB (Device1 - Paths 2) Other option from within the controllers bios to "mirror" the same lun0 that was seen from SPA & SPB of the v3700 but this is rediculous.. and out of the point.

So we managed to replace the sas cards with IBM n2225 on the DL380 G9 and guess what .. LUN0 & LUN1 became visible and with multipathing (2 Devices 4 Paths) as it must be.

This is very dissaponted support from HP

Also (for IBM SAN Users) be warned form the VMware's Vaai ATS Heartbeat Issue on HP (and probably other brand hosts) when connecting ESXi 5.5u2 or ESXi 6.0 to an IBM SAN. Vmware's KB 2113956 and IBM KB S1005201

Re: P2000 MSA G3 SAS & Proliant Gen9 Server

Hello BK_HP

it sounds good, bud does it work with vSphere 6?

We want to replace  Proliant DL380 G7 together with SAS-3801 adaptors and MSA 2012 sas to

Proliant DL 380 G9 with H241 smart adaptors and MSA 2040 sas.

The old config with the DL380 G7 and the MSA 2012 works fine under vSphere 6 U1. (Isn't it crazy?)

Re: P2000 MSA G3 SAS & Proliant Gen9 Server

Folks,

Got an update yesterday on this whole deal.  Turns out between HP and VM there are no less than 5 fixes they are working on for this whole Gen9/SAS/MSA/VM issue.

No word yet on when the fixes will be out.  HP loaned us a pair of Gen8 servers back in May after we reported this issue and they have been fine ever since.  It is definitely a Gen9 thing, not a Gen8 thing.
