How best to discover backup devices?

We have SE 9.5 with Backup manager. Our backup environment consists of Data Protector 6.11, with a single cell manager in a Microsoft cluster. We have to ESL tape libs and two VLS on each site. We have Command View  TL installed on the cell manager.

In system manager none of my EML's nor VLS's show any links to the switches and all have a question mark above them.

Should these devices be discovered using CVTL or BAckup manager? The book stats that backup manager can discover tape devices but does not go into detail on how to configure this.

How are other people discovering tape devices? and which is the preferred method?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: How best to discover backup devices?

Backup Manager discovery of the Cell Manager will pick up all logical tape devices visible to the backup environment... and for many cases is sufficient for reporting purposes. For ESL (and EML) you have the option of using CV TL SMI-S for direct discovery (outside of the context of Backup Manager), not much more detail is provided when adding SMI-S base discovery - and there are many possible gotcha's for setup of the SMI-S provider. For VLS, you also have the option of direct discovery using the CV VLS SMI-S provider, depending on the version it is possible you need to work with support for a patch (for the VLS, not SE ---- though there is a SE 9.5.1 service pack that is strongly recommended). The VLS direct discovery does add some interesting depth, for example SE can then provide a detailed view of the VLS, and report on dedup ratio metrics for example.

If you are not having success with the direct discovery using their SMI-S providers, it would be suggested to open support cases... likely you can start with SE support, but you may very well need to work with the device provider support teams in context.

Re: How best to discover backup devices?

Hi Wiley,

Thanks for your reply.

We currently have CVTL ver3.0 installed as we had issues with 2.x and were advised to upgrade. According to the SE support matrix for 9.5 CVTL v3.x isn't supported.

How do I discover the tape and VLS devices using Backup Manager? In the install guide for SE9.5 it only mentions that the devices can be discovered but doesn't give any details on how to configure this.

Thanks again for assistance.

Re: How best to discover backup devices?

The current posted support matrix (on SPOCK) lists the following:

ESL Tape Library 712e, 630e, 322e, 286e, 9xxx Windows 2003, WS2008 CV-TL  2.8, 3.0, 3.0.1
No event support
CV-TL and CV-EVA can coexist on the same machine.

EML Tape Library 71e, 103e, 245e. 348e, 375e, 442e, 469e, and 505e HP StorageWorks  Virtual Library System HP StorageWorks 9000 Virtual Library System VLS SMI-S Patch version:  hp_3.4.1.1_reboot_3044
Firmware Version: 3.4.1.1

No event support.
Pls contact SE support representative to get access to the controlled release patch mentioned here.

Since the discovery of the Cell Manager will provide similar capabilities for the ESL/EML, it would be my recommendation to not spend too much time (if any) attempting direct (CV TL SMI-S) discovery of this device - there is really little value-added by having the tape discovered both via the Backup Manager integration, and also directly via SMI-S.

If you chose to discover, it's the same process as with any other device, assure that the SMI-S provider was installed and configured properly via the documentation (CV-TL) and then use SE Setup Step 1 to run discovery against the CV-TL server IP address with the required credentials. Use the TEST option to verify if needed. Opening support case(s) with the tape provider team if needed.

For the VLS, there would be value-added in discovery of the VLS SMI-S (to suppliment the Backup Manger discovery details) as the provider can suppliement details such as dedup ratio reporting... assuming you have a supported configuration this would involve installing and configuration CV VLS and it's SMI-S provider, and using the standard discovery process (SE Setup Step 1, then Step 3) and opening support case(s) with the VLS provider team and/or SE team if there was not success.

Re: How best to discover backup devices?

Note: SE Backup Manager _automatically_ discovers all tape devices from the context/perspective of the Cell Manager. No additional steps are required other than performing discovery of the backup server - no discovery run against the tape devices directly in that case.

The _option_ for many tape devices to also run direct discovery (SMI-S) against the tape device, which _may_ suppliment the Backup Manager details, with device information presented in the other SE navigation views.
