HP NAS 1000s

Several MS security patches were applied on Friday to our NAS 1000. This morning, NAS was discovered with BSOD. Upon restarting, NAS gets to CRTL+ALT+DEL, login info is entered, and then desktop appears for 3-4 seconds before it automatically restarts. We uninstalled all MS security patches and NAS still restarts automatically once it hits the desktop. Has anyone run across this issue before? HP is wanting us to reinstall SP4 as well as the MS security patches.. PLEASE HELP :-) !!

HP had to send someone onsite to replace one of the hard drives. It has been working fine since that point however, we have had far too many problems with this device. It should be more stable considering how it is relied upon within the organization.

hhm we have problems with stability at sp4. We have a weekly unexplained reboot without any error message. Just a cryptic message that appmon "recovered" the system from a resource problem. We are contemplating upgrading to the Windows 2003 version just to see if thats any better.

We have seen this before when the server is overloaded. Basically, the server is too busy serving file requests to reset the watchdog timer, or the overload causes consumption of critical resources to a dangerous level (i.e. exhausting non-paged pool until BSOD), which results in a reboot. I would lay odds that appmon is catching the fact that your available memory resources are getting to a critical level and therefore reboots the server before the server gets a BSOD or grinds to a halt.

That said, does the reboot occur each week around the same time. For example, is a backup job kicking off around this time, heavy read/write activity occuring, AV scan kicking off, etc?

Assuming it is the available memory that is getting depleted and causing appmon to reboot the server, there are a other factors/actions to look at:

1) If you haven't already, you can install NAS SAK 2.01 Service Pack 1a. http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/21019.html

2) Make sure PSM is at the latest released version (SAK sp1a should have this included). http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/73_5622.html

There also could be an application with a memory leak consuming the memory, so it would be good to note when the reboots are occuring what applications are running at that moment.

Upgrading to WSS may help, but it all depends on what is happening when the server reboots. If, for example, the culprit is PSM, upgrading to WSS will solve the issue, because WSS does not have PSM -- it uses Microsoft's VSS application instead for your snapshots.
