HPE StoreEasy 1460 32TB Storage Product Technical Query

Dear product specialist,

Could you please let me know ,

1) Whether the OS is installed in a separate HDD in StoreEasy 1460 32TB storage ?

2) What is the usable capacity we can provision for other servers in this storage ?

3) Can we map iSCSI LUNs from this storage to a Linux / VMware server and present it as a disk to OS ?

4) Can we position this storage server for a VMware / Hyper v cluster ?

Much appreciate your quick response.

Re: HPE StoreEasy 1460 32TB Storage Product Technical Query

Hi Chamith,

Let me address each question individually:

1) On the 1460, the operating system drive is carved out from the 4 LFF drive slots in the front. A dedicated (RAID1) logical drive is created to accomodate the operating system. Separate logical drives can (/will) be created for the data. This means your operating system and the configuration is separate from your data and they are independently protected while sharing the same drives.

2) Usable capacity depends on what RAID protection you aspire. We have customers using RAID10 (recommended) or RAID5 on this system. Using RAID10, it's approximately 15.8 TB.

3) The system supports exporting iSCSI LUNs. At this point the 6th generation of StoreEasy 1000 is not yet on the VMware HCL. Althouth it works, your support experience is limited as HCL is a prerequisite from VMware for support.

4) The StoreEasy 1000 is a single node system. If you don't require full redundancy, this is a viable option for providing data storage for Hyper-V (iSCSI, SMB3) clusters. For VMware (iSCSI), the system is not yet on the HCL and support is limited. If you seek block / data storage for these two use cases (virtualizaiton on HyperV or VMware), I'd recommend our MSA storage system, which will provide you a feature rich, cost effective system that is fully certified and proven in these environments. No you will not get 10TB

HPE StoreEasy 1460 16TB SATA Storage Q2R93A
NOTE: (4 x 4TB 6G 7.2K RPM LFF SATA HDDs with pre-installed OS).

StoreEasy 1460 Pre -configured Build - to -Order (BTO) models come with four factory
-
installed data drives and the Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2016 Standard Edition operating system pre-installed on a 150GB RAID10 partition across the four drives.
--> u will get 8GB out of which 150 GB will be OS

2) I beleive this storage comes with pre-installed WSS2016 and do let me know whether OS drives are seperate from 4 x 2TB 6G 7.2K RPM LFF SATA HDDs ?

-->It will be SAME for 2TB model also.

All HP drivers are bundled in SR and SPP. So when you select the model and download. It will update all the components.

Thanks,

Prashant S.

Re: HPE StoreEasy 1460 32TB Storage Product Technical Query

Hi Prashant,

not sure what you calculated there. In a RAID5 scenario (althouth not recommended), you'll have a little less than 12TB usable capacity, so achieving 10 TB usable capacity on the StoreEasy 1460 16TB is possible. If a proper backup solution is in place, a RAID5 can be considered.

To answer the second question, yes, it does come with the operating system pre-installed. The OS drives are not isolated from the data drive, i.e. they are not dedicated, but shared. However, they are on separate logical drives (a virtualization layer on top of the physical media). That means you have your C:\ drive with the OS and then a D:\ (or more) drives that contain your data.

Dear tabios

Do we need to reinstall the WSS2016 in the storage if we need to reconfigure the storage with RAID5 ?

Re: HPE StoreEasy 1460 32TB Storage Product Technical Query

Hi Chamith,

No you don't need to reinstall the operating system. After the first boot (when you first setup your system), you can use the Smart Storage Administrator (SSA) tool, found in the Windows menu, to configure your data drive. You won't touch the operating system drive.

In the attached screenshot, you can see that there is a locical drive of 254.39 GiB in RAID 1+0 carved out that is used for the OS. The remaining space on the 4 HDDs can be used for your data with a different RAID configuration.

Just select "Create Logical Drive" and select RAID5, as seen in the screenshot. As you might have noticed, I am not suggesting to use the new management console for this. The simple reason is that the management console allows you (at this point) to configure only the best practice (RAID10). However, there is nothing that prevents you from using SSA to configure RAID5 as per the above instructions.
