USB Backup evice on a makeshift server

i install windows 2003 server on a dx2400 desktop for a small network and tried to have it back up on a seagate external backup drive(usb of course). the machine has 3 different types of readers built but it wouldn't recongnise the external drive. Anyone got ideas how i can go round this?
