dvd writer problems


Hello,

I was not sure where to post this question. I just bought dvd740e, dvd writer. It's recognized by my laptop sometimes and sometimes not and when I put in a DVD, I can't use it as a dvd writer - it supports only CD. I also don't have the driver files (didn't come in the box and not available on the hp webpage). Any suggestions?
Please, help!
