1/8 tape loader G2 - compression question

I have a 1/8 tape loader with LTO-4 ultrium SCSI using Backupexec 12d with windows 2003 server. I've just run a few test jobs using hardware compression in backupexec and for some reason the compression ratio I got was either 1:1 (no compression at all) or 1:2, 1:4 and 1:7.

Most of the files I back up are images (jpg, bmp, etc) Would this explain the crappy compression ratio?
Thanks

Re: 1/8 tape loader G2 - compression question

.jpg images cannot be compressed.
.bmp can be compressed but the ratio depends a lot on what the contents are.

If you create a BMP of 10000x10000 pixels, all the same color, it will compress to 1 million to one or something like that.

If you get more that 1:1 then compression on the drive is working.

Thank you. That clears up a few things.
