40x6e noticable squeak on load/eject

We have been using this drive for about a year. It has now developed a noticable squeak when loading and unloading and while accessing tapes. Is this a sing of pending troubles? Any PM we could do to fix the squeak. Sounds like a capstan rubbing against a cartridge.

Thanks

This sound is produced by drive's internal cleaning mech and can be the sign of drive experiencing problems accessing magnetic tape (excessive error rate).
DAT drives should be cleaned after every 5 full backups or 20 tape pulling hours. Did you follow this rule?
Install LTT http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/ltt/index.html and check its support ticket.
On the page http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?pnameOID=18545&locale=en_US&taskId=135&prodSeriesId=63890&prodTypeId=12169 you can find a link to "Wav file with a sample of normal sounds produced by DAT drives". Check these sounds to understand if your drive ok or not

Re: 40x6e noticable squeak on load/eject

Could you please clarify what you mean by load/eject. Do you mean when you load/eject the magazine, or do you mean when the autoloader is loading tapes into the drive?

Have you seen any errors being reported?

Best regards,
Barrie

It was when the tapes were being loaded and unloaded from the magazine by the autoloader mechanism. Running a few passes of the cleaning tape seems to have made it go away.
